.284 Winchester Brass

Re: .284 Winchester Brass

There are a couple of threads on 284, most of those IIRC recommend going Lapua 6.5-284 and necking up.

Win 284 Win brass is seasonal and can be hard to find at times.

Thanks Guys!
Reeljob </div></div>

The only sources for .284 Win brass: Winchester

However, 6.5/284 brass may be necked up to 284 Win.

Hornady, Lapua, Norma, and Nosler all make 6.5/284 brass that can be used.

Due the fat case and rebated rim, the 284 win cannot be formed from any other common brass.

Re: .284 Winchester Brass

Thanks for the great info guys.
Bob, still hate I didn't get a chance to meet you at Juniper Swamp but I still remember the favor on brass and powder. Maybe we will get another chance soon.

Look forward to it. Best of luck with your new 284.

Re: .284 Winchester Brass

I neck up Lapua 6.5-284 brass using a Sinclair expander die in a Dillon 650 with casefeeder.

First I set all the cases into an MTM ammo box, neck up.

Then I use a little bottle brush doped up with Imperial sizing wax to grease up the inside of the case necks a bit.

Then I dump the cases into my casefeeder, and start pulling the lever. Couldn't be easier!

Re: .284 Winchester Brass

Started out using Winchester brass on a no-neck turn chamber, .317. Tried 50pcs of necked up Lapua, after 3 firings developed fairly severe donuts, don't want to fuss with reaming out the donuts, went back to Winchester brass.

Re: .284 Winchester Brass

Brass and 139 SST Hornady's on the way, should hit the door on Monday. The rifle I traded for is a Remington 700 BDL which has been re-barreled with a Douglas .284 Winchester 22" sporter weight. I am looking forward to shooting the new rifle and getting it into the whitetail woods in a few weeks. Since I won't be loading for this rifle like I do my .260 and .308 I opted for Win brass, should be fine for an occasional range trip rifle. 50 pcs should last awhile with my current plans for the rifle.
Thanks Again!

Re: .284 Winchester Brass

reeljob, keep us updated on how it shoots. I'm very happy with my heavy 284. Considering building a lighter 284 for hunting with a 22-24" barrel.

Short or long action?

Short Action, I will post the details after I get loaded up!

Re: .284 Winchester Brass

Brass and 139 SST's arrived today. First batch proved a little better than MOA. This looks very promising. I think I can find a more efficient powder than Varget for this rifle but that's what I had on hand to start with first. Didn't chrono but should be 2600'ish. Loaded up another string with 4831sc to test tomorrow. Thanks again for the help!

Re: .284 Winchester Brass

Very cool. Keep us posted. Don't forget to try H4350 and perhaps even RE17.

I bought H4831sc, H4350 and RE17 to try in mine, but I have a feeling the RE17 won't be temp stable enough for me. It's generally regarded as the speed king for this caliber though.

I have thought H4350 would be a candidate for this rifle but I can not find any data on this powder for the 139 SST. I have some on hand to try if I can find load data for it. RE17 is not in my inventory and Im trying to decide between buying the RE17 or Vihtavuori N150 which looks like it may be the ticket as well.

This is EXACTLY why everyone always advises to have as many loading manuals as possible! Sometimes you just gotta read between the lines and take a (well) educated guess, knowing that:

Heavier bullets = less powder
Longer bearing surface = less powder
Less bullet jump = less powder

Not being snarky at all, I just want to tag this response to explain to newbies why they need 10 loading manuals! Gives you more data points to go from so you can make (WELL) educated guesses in your loading.

If no one else jumps in first, I'll take a look through my manuals tonight and give you *my* best guess, which you are welcome to try or tell me to get bent. My "shoot from the hip" guess is that you won't be able to get enough H4350 in the case and still seat that SST to go overpressure....but prudence is of course, a good thing.

H4350 load data for the 284 Winchester & 139 SST right here:

http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp
2.915" OAL
Min 52.0gr - 2840fps
Max 57.0gr - compressed - 3079fps

No problems from me Turbo! I am not a newbie but great advice for those that are new to reloading and a good reminder to those which are. Plenty of manuals on the bench just no data for a particular powder in the Hornady manual for the 139 SST, and if I can help it I like not to guess and would rather work off of printed load data.

Boiler, thanks for the link. I forgot to check Hogdons site for the info, only problem is my rifle is short action and I can't seat any longer than 2.80 OAL. I hate to go single loading on a hunting rifle. It looks as if I'm beating a dead horse with the SST. I am getting MOA with 42.3 of Varget so if I decide to use the SST I will settle on the Varget Load with the 2600'ish velocities.

Re: .284 Winchester Brass

Serious question, but do SA Remmys limit OAL in the box mag to 2.80, or is that just a AICS mag thing?

My 260 is a Savage 10FP with "centerfeed" blind mag, and I load 130 Berger VLDs to 2.95" and they easily fit & feed in the magazine.

I certainly wouldn't give up on H4350...just start at the bottom end and work up in 0.4-0.5gr increments until you see 1. the accuracy and velocity you want or 2. pressure.

There's also always RL-17...

Re: .284 Winchester Brass

In my Savage .260 and .308 with VLDs I have plenty of room to seat long in the mag but in this Rem box mag I am limited with the 2.80 If I remember correctly in my SPS, which I do not own anymore, I did seat longer than 2.80 but I would have to dig through my notes to see exactly what length it was.
I am still considering the 4350. May try a run later.

I finally printed a good 5 shot 100 yard group.I finally swallowed the fact the SST would not do what I wanted in the short action and this is my first try with 140 GameKings and Varget at 2.80. Going to work today on increasing the Varget load. I also loaded some with RE17 and shot around 3/4" so its time to drag out the chrono being I'm finally moving in the right direction. This is just a hunting rifle but I am really starting to think about a long action build in the future being the .284 shows alot of promise as a LR weapon.

This is where I started with 140 SST's. This was actually one of the best with the Hornadys.
