.284 winchester velocity

Re: .284 winchester velocity

what's you powder? I'm using 4831sc 55.5 grains and barely getting 2800, around 56 grains it gets a little too hot. my tube is only 26 so that could be part of the difference. Tried r-17 and got a little more velocity but the accuracy was not there.

Re: .284 winchester velocity

I'm using 4831SC also. With 54.4 grains I'm getting around 2850 out of a 28" barrel shooting the SMK 175. I'm right at 3200 rounds on this barrel and it's starting to get a little tired. Velocity have fallen off in the last 100 rounds.

Re: .284 winchester velocity

I'm using 55grs of 4831SC to get 2950, 56grs gave me 3020 but like you it was a little too much.
I'm sure the longer barrel helps some but only getting 2800 seems low.
I get 2850 with the 180 Berger using 54grs of H4831SC.
I tried RL-17 but the accuracy wasn't as good as H4831SC.

What barrel are you using to get 2800 fps?

Somewhere in the ~2700-2750 zone, based on equal muzzle energy for both bullets (m1*v1^2 = m2*v2^2), which is a reasonable method.

Now, run the numbers and see what bullets make sense with this cartridge.
