.284Win Question

Re: .284Win Question

I originally built mine on a short action and made a single shot out of it. It worked great like that but I wanted to be able to use it for tactical matches if I wanted, so changed it to a long action.

If your not needing to load out of a mag then you sure can use a short action.

Re: .284Win Question

I run a 284 on an FN SPR, out of Alpha type 3&4 magazine which allow me a solid 2.950" COAL.

I'm seeing ~2850fps with 175smk from a 28" barrel.

My 26" barrel was more like 2725-2750fps.

7mm-08 vs 284 in a SA, assuming EQUAL COAL, the 284 will always carry a 100-150fps advantage.

If limited to 2.800" COAL, either will be neutered.

7-08 is usually case capacity limited with H4350 + 162amax, around 46gr. A 26" barrel plus stiff charge of H4350 gives somewhere between 2750 and 2800.

I've had poor success with 162s by the way - in 3 of 4 barrels, they just won't shoot. My advice is DON'T pin your hopes and dreams on that one bullet. Next up is Berger 168VLD. The 168smk sucks. The 175smk is awesome, and very, very easy to find a good load for. Not sure just how fast the 7-08 can sling it, but even at a modest 2600, it would make a helluva performer.

Other SA 7s to look into are:

7mm Creedmoor/7mm GPC
7mm SLR

Re: .284Win Question

shot my 284 this weekend. 162 amax over 59.0 grs H4831SC wielded 2,920 feet per. group was 4 rounds touching and 5th flung out all retarded like due to my inability to shoot fer shit. next is test at range

That's a pretty stout load. Any signs of high pressure? I was using 55.5 grs H4831 with 162s and getting 2850 fps out of a 28" tube (no signs of pressure) and that was slightly compressed. Tempted to try to get it up to 2900 but a little nervous about pushing it that hard. How compressed was your load?

When I tested 162s with H4831sc in my 26" 284, got to 2875 at 55ish gr, and gained nothing running up to 57 or 57.5, which was very compressed @ 2.950" COAL.

Did you see a nice steady velocity increase with more powder?

Seems to me if you're going to use nearly 60gr of H4831sc, might as well put it under a 180 in a 7RSAUM and approach 3000fps with the 180…

compressed but wouldnt say overly, slight cratering of firing pin strike hole

dunno, I had read on here a guys load with same barrel specs being 59.1 at 2,900 with H4831SC, so I loaded 5 at 58.7, 5 at 59.0 and 5 at 59.3, velocity range in the three loads was +/- 15 fps but the 59 even grouped wonderfully, yes thats a whole lotta powder though

Re: .284Win Question

I was loading 59.1 grains of H4831sc for the first 200 rds. My velocities went up to 3000fps and accuracy then went to shit. I plan to back the load down to 58.8 and see if I can't get some of the magic back. I recently shot the venerable 168 vld with 52.7 grains of H4350. BOING!

That much 4831sc is awful hard on the brass-primer pockets have loosened considerably.
