285 a-max?

I concur - 1:10 is enough to stabilize. I couldn't get the 285 BHTP to shoot worth a damn in mine, but others have had great results.

Huh? Is that in the DTA you couldn't get them to shoot well? If so I wonder what barrel your using.

285 is all I shoot now. Granted I seem to get a little better accuracy out of my 250 scenars.

I have a Gen 1 SRS from the first batch and the barrel I worked on the 285s was from that batch, so it's entirely possible that in five years something about the SRS barrels has changed. Barrels are unique beasts at times anyway and I've logged my frustrations on the 285s in several areas here as I went through several boxes of them last year with various powders, all trying to find a decent load without success. So you can imagine my frustration knowing that others were having great success? And just to sanity check my process, I started load development on 300 Scenars late last year using N570 and got excellent results in very little time. That was the point that I stopped working on the 285s. Now that I have an 18" barrel too, I may give it another go but that same 300 Scenar load shoots very well in that short barrel as well, so there's kind of no point.

OK, I get that.

Sorry man, I should have asked what the twist rate of your barrel is? They may very well be different from the older gen? I don't even know what I am running on my SRS A1 338 barrel. I think my sako however is 1:9.5 and it loves everything from 250-300 equally.

I shoot the 285 out of my HS Precision 338 and it loves them. I switch back and forth from the 300 Berger to the A-Max but I am very pleased with the A-Max results.

The 26" .338LM barrels are 1:10 and the 18" are 1:9. It's not a twist rate thing at all, it's just a funky issue with that barrel. With no rhyme or reason, it loves 250s and 300s but didn't like 285s in just about any combination of powder, seating depth, etc.
