3 Round Bursts - HK VP70M

I have the Z-version. No stock. No burst fire.

Amazing guns... first polymer pistol a decade ahead of the Glock.

They were designed specifically for Ule Wegner and the GSG-9 guys. The 'harsh' trigger was intentional and was designed to be easy to operate under high-stress situations... when you don't notice how hard a trigger pull is. And where a light single-action trigger might be a liability. The Delta guys (who love their .45's) might disagree. But the GSG-9 guys were double-action Smith fans before 1-SFOD was even launched. So they had their use and their adherents. But these burst stocks/VP pistols never caught on as the MP-5 superceded the need. And is a far superior platform. And still state-of-the art.

The VP70Z pistols are stone bargains... because they take a lot of practice to shoot well. But polygonal rifling, 18 round magazines and reliable as gravity (not to mention great ergonomics) make it a great gun to own. You can find in-box examples with 2 mags for a few hundred bucks. They never wear out. Most were never fired much... because of the sucky trigger pull. But once you get used to it, the guns are tack drivers.

I think there are 5 M-variants in the US that came in before the Huges Amendment screwed us all over. They are spendy. If one can get one at all.

But definitely if you want a great 9mm... it's a worthwhile gun to own.

Cheers,

Sirhr

That's a great synopsis of the Tupperware gun that was ahead of its time. I had the chance to shoot a P7 side by side with a VP70 pretty regularly many years ago and the difference in those two triggers (and approaches to weapons design in general) is obviously galaxies apart. The VP70 still eclipses a HiPoint as the worst trigger pull I've experienced, but the original New York and Super New York triggers from Glock felt damn near identical to a VP70. That "forever" trigger pull has its merits in the right circumstances, but when it came down to my pennies I don't regret having purchased an original in-box P7.

^^^ I still lust after a P7. I shot those, too. And loved them. There were a ton of them available cheap about 8 years ago as police trade-ins. And they are the Rolls-Royce of 9mm Autos. Squeeze cock... smooth as glass. I still want one. But they keep going up in price at accelerating rates....

Your purchase, Bogey, was brilliant and well-reasoned. Glad to know you have one! One day, I'll find a deal.

I really kind of lucked into mine about 6 years ago or so. HKParts had great prices on P7-P models, and it reminded me of how much I'd love to have a P7 in the collection, but I didn't want the "P" model, so I just occasionally sniffed around and IIRC found one for an exceedingly fair price on GB of all places. I'm not positive that's where I found it, but I'm almost certain.

I really can't fathom owning even one of the pieces in your collection, but the P7 and all original ( with box, paperwork, target, and factory mags still in the paper wrappers) HK91 are very special gems in my tiny little pile. My yearning for both of them (and my Benelli for that matter) came from seeing them in those badass ads on the back page of gun mags when I was a youngster. It's almost like that visceral response to picking up a Playboy and remembering the awe and wonder of seeing one when you were 15.

Totally random, in cleaning out old boxes I found my "No Compromise" shirt and patch from the early 90s.
