Rifle Scopes 3" sunshade: Will it require different ring height

Re: 3" sunshade: Will it require different ring height

Hi Paul,

I was thinking that with the scope being longer and with the 25 MOA base which is canted downward slightly that it might affect postion of scope in relation to barrel, especially with lens protector caps installed on sunshade.

I was going to try to use forumula on this site to determine ring height, that's why I asked for what is the the outside diameter of the bell of the scope with lens protector cap installed. (not the size of the objective lens).

Gotcha, I want to say our 5-25 is around 66mm with lens covers but if you don't have an exact amount by tomorrow I will measure one for you and you can just plug that radius into your formula.
I'm home now or else I would do it for you tonight.
Thanks,
Paul
PS: I will check post first thing in the AM.

Re: 3" sunshade: Will it require different ring height

The extra clearance needed due to the 3" sunshade on a scope mounted on a 25 MOA canted base is:

(3 in) x (25 MOA) x (1.0472 in/100 yd) x (1 yd/36 in) = 0.0218 in.

0.218" will probably not make any difference. If it does, the rings were too low to begin with, and depending on the weapon, you may get some clearance back due to the barrel taper.

I've used a 3" sunshade on a Bushnell Elite, and even with a 0 moa mount, and a parallel (non tapering) target barrel, even the act of adding flip-up lens covers pushed me from low into medium ring height.
