Well, I just got my 30.06 back from the gunsmith. I had it re-barrelled with a 32" Krieger barrel, chambered in 30.06 Ackley Improved. It is a Rem 700 action, mounted in a HS Precision stock that I took off my Rem 700P-338LM when I bought a chassis for that.
I took it to the range without a scope, as I hadn't gotten home to get the scope yet. I shot 50 rounds of old hand loads that I had made before the rebarrel, and in this way got some brass fire-formed. It was kinda cool being able to watch the bullet impact the berm seemingly just off the end of the barrel. Recoil is minimal now, and I didn't have issues with the rifle hopping like it used to----I know, I need to work on recoil management, but that will be easier now that there isn't as much to manage. I made up 50 rounds of ammo in fire-formed brass, and made up 50 rounds in my new Lapua brass to form.
We are headed to the Mifflin County 1000 yd range tomorrow, and I shall get it sighted in and try it out. I will save a few rounds to shoot at 1000 yards, as I am sure they will reach there. I did up some 230gr Berger Hybrids with 56.9gr Reloader 22 for a yield of 2645FPS---that should be a good OBT node for this barrel.
I'll report back with details of the shoot and a few pics of the rifle after the weekend.
