30-06 build

Re: 30-06 build

You can do it but the twist rate would be slow and you couldnt take advantage of the better bullets for the bigger .30 calibers like the 208 Amax. My opinion is your gonna build one, do it with the faster twist for the bigger bullets instead of trying to build it to have belted magnum power by doing lighter bullets and pushing them hard.

Re: 30-06 build

my reasoning was that the 155's do well in the 308, so maybe somewhat better in a 06. This is out there for speculation, I can just as easily build a 280 or 284.

No, the 208 Amax will hold speed better and buck more wind at 2750fps, than a 155 Palma at 3100fps.

Re: 30-06 build

I don't see anywhere here on this thread where the twist was listed? Unless I missed it?

A standard .30-06 twist for saami spec. is 1-10. That should handle the 208's just fine.

That being said I don't load any 200's and heavier for my 06's. If I'm going to shoot heavier bullets I will go to the .300 mag.

I load mostly 155's, 175's and 185's in my 06's. The H4350 powder I've used it quite a bit with 155's in my rebuilt '03 as a Model 1941 USMC sniper rifle and it shoots excellent.

Also finishing a rebuild on a Remington Model 30 Express right now. Duplicated the sporter contour and 22" finish length. First loads I'll run thru it will be the 155's. That barrel is a 11.25 twist and the '03 barrel is a 11 twist. Those twist with no problem handle up to 190's and even some of the 200's.

Why? I know you said why but that is a terrible bit of reasoning. The 1-10 will still do great with the 155gr in a 30-06.
Why handicap yourself with the 155. Use the 190SMK or the 185 Berger and watch this 108 yr old cartridge show you it still has what it takes to run with the big boys. With the 190 clocking 2880 FPS (my load in my Krieger barrel) the '06 makes 1300yds pretty easy. I have made a hit at a mile with my 06 and the 190 SMK. There is no need for any heavier bullet than the 190 in my opinion and my rifle simply does not like the 208AMax with the Serengetti chamber. I can give you all the specs on my rifle if you want to PM me.

Re: 30-06 build

Thanks all,
The twist I was considering is a 1 in 12. Purpose of rifle is to build a rifle both to shoot comps with and to have as a hunting rifle.

In the last 6 or 7 shoots I have made this last year or so I have noticed the guys that are at the top are the ones who shoot their equipment well and have the small things worked out. Not so much that they are shooting a lazer. I learned a long time ago, learn to shoot what you bring. There seems always to be something better out there.

The 30-06 shooting a 155 will not have the following that the super wind cheaters do, but a man shooting a 155 at 30-06 velocities is not going to be far behind especially when you consider that, if you can hit 60% of your shots out to 700 and let the rest take care of themselves you will do pretty well.

Again, I was looking for some thoughts from those who might be shooting one. Thanks Frank for your input, I enjoyed talking with all the Bartlein boys at Shreveport and thanks for the support to both the shoot and the community.

Re: 30-06 build

My heavy '06 is 1/10. I shoot the 208s mostly, but the 155s are quite accurate as well.

Here's a target with 155 Scenar, and RL15 I tossed together, no load workup.

If you go 1/12, you should still be able to shoot the 208s well, should you want to. I shoot the 208s in a 1/12 308Win, with consistent accuracy.
