I'm looking for a good combination to start with loading the 30 06. I see alot of info for the .308 of course but not the 30 06. I would like you guys to give me your input if anyone still uses the 30 06 for longe range shooting. Now I know every rifle has it's own sweet spot and you have to work up loads with different components, I'm just looking for a general starting point.
Thanks in advance,
LH

Re: 30 06 handloads

Two big -06 shooters here would be MontanaMarine and USSR. There are others, but I remember these two off the top of my head. Check out their posts and if all else fails, search and some good loads will pop up.

What type of rifle? Barrel length?

One that MM sent me was 61 grns RE22 and 190 SMK. Case and primers that you got.

Don't listen to me on this load however, look up those two for their information.

YMMV

Re: 30 06 handloads

Thanks DHD. I have a Remington 700 with 24 inch fluted barrel, mounted in a Mcmillan HTG that's bedded, Jewell trigger set at 1 lb.Planning on mounting a Mark 4 Leupold 10X M3 with the Mark 4 mounts and rings.

Re: 30 06 handloads

Anything in the 190-210gr range over about a full case of RL22 is usually a good combo.

My favorite is a moly'd 208 AMax over 61gr RL22 in a neck-sized Norma or Win case, lit with a CCI 200 primer. It makes 2720 fps from a 22.4" bbl, and the .648 BC retains velocity very well.

Typical 100yd accuracy, this is with roughly 4500 rounds down the pipe.

Very nice 1000 yd load, and I stretch this load out to a mile for shits n giggles. It's surprisingly consistent out there. 73 moa el correction at 4500' el. MK4 16X has the legs for it.

Here are load notes for some of the bullets/powders I've worked up in my rifle.

Re: 30 06 handloads

MontanaMarine turned me onto the RL-22 and 208 Amax, it's a very very viable long range round.

My 26" 1:10 gets 2885fps from 59.5gr of RL-22 with 208's, after letting one round cook for 45sec due to a wind gust I got a single round at 3059 fps. I was amazed.

I like H4350 for 178's, I can't actually get enough powder into a R-P case to make an overpressure load with RL-22

There's a thread that some of us have been trying to bolster a little in the reloading depot subforum.

Here's a link to it, there's many more loads obviously. I got my middleweight bullet loading data from Hodgdon's and Alliant's websites.

What's the old saying? "Not too many problems that cant be fixed with $500 and a 30'06"

One of my shooting pards has a 40X chambered in '06. He shot the best 500yrd grp ever shot on my range, you could have covered the 3 shot grp with a half dollar easy. Maybe a quarter, sure wish he would have measured. Of course I told him he as a pussy for not shooting two more times. I'm sorry I cant help much with the load but I think he was using 4064 and 175 MK's in Norma brass, its been a while. I'll try and find out the rest of the info and post it here. Always luved the '06.

Jeff Cooper's daughter published that IIRC, and it was "There's not too many things that can't be fixed, with $700 and a thirty-ought six"... I could be out to lunch though, who knows.

Glad I could help out. The guy using H4350 and 208's. I use that powder for hunting loads with the 178 Amax. I get 2915 avg. MV from 57gr of powder out of Win brass. It doesn't have quite the legs a 208 @ 2885 does, but I don't need mile-shot loads to kill the little PA deer inside of 400.

I'd guess that with my barrel I would be around 2750 with a 208 and H4350, certainly nothing to sneeze at.

OK, finally got hold of him and here's the load;

58gr. Hodgkins 4350
Winchester brass
BR 2 prmers
175 SMK's
.002 off the lands in a 10 twist barrel that's 27.25" long (factory 40X barrel).

Hav'nt crony'ed it yet but will on the next trip, possibly a week from today. Nothing special but Its a hell of a combo though and very consistant from his rifle.

okie
