So I've been pushing my rem. Ltr out to bout 700 yards and I have been shhoting 168 smk's, next weekend I'm going to try stretching it out to 1000 yards and was wanting to know if I might get a little better accuracy with 175 grain, I know that means I got to start from scratch

I would go with 175/178's for anything over 700. The 168's tend to destabilize around 800 yards. Some people use 155's for 1000 yards.

There is a lot of info on this forum, so you won't have to re-invent the wheel.

+1 or any of the Berger vld or JLK vld flavor. For me 168's work great at my home range 900' ASL out to 800, after that they become difficult...

It depends on your rifle. My savage hates Hornady for some reason, and loves sierra. It has more to do with your bore to the actually diameter of the bullets. At a comp about a month and a half ago I shot a 9" disk twice at 906yds with 39gr 3031 and 168gr smk. My problem was more of them dropping out of supersonic then destabolizing. I think you would be ok at 1000 with 168s just get your fund. down and have a good spotter and compensate.

Good luck,

Re: 30 .cal 168 smk or 175

I've got a rifle that shoots the 168 SMK's VERY well but it falls apart after 800 yds at sea level, it shot a 1/2 MOA group at 800, then a 1 MOA group at 900 then the bullets were keyholing at 1000 yds. I tested 175's and it doesn't like them. So I tried the 168 AMAX's and it likes them too. So I load them at 2710 fps and they will go to 1000 yds no problem.

BUT I'd much rather shoot the SMK 175's as they will go to 1000 yds no problem. (The 155 Scenar's are great bullets too but they cost so DARN much as compared to the SMK175's.)

Re: 30 .cal 168 smk or 175

168s work across the course (200-600 yards). I used the old 180s (now the 175 SMKs) at 1000 yards.

Having said that, after seeing the results of the 180(175s) at 1000 I started using them in my M14/M1As at 600 yards and did pick up a few points. I never saw any advantage of the 175s at 200 & 300 yards.

+1, loved the 178 Hornadys. </div></div>

I'm just going to start reloading and was wondering,
are you talking 178 AMAX or the 178 superformance factory loads?
