Gunsmithing 30 calibur 1 in 12 twist

Re: 30 calibur 1 in 12 twist

I ran 1 in 11 twist in my first barrel for my 300 Win. Mag and the heaviest bullet I could run and still have gyroscopic stability (SG) was about 210 grain. 210 Grain LR Bergers gave me an SG of 1.56. I will not run less than 1.4 SG. I ran alot of 190 grain SMK's with this twist and it was fine. You would probably have to run some lighter bullets to get away with 1 in 12 twist. My new barrel is going to be 1 in 10 twist for the 300 Win. Mag. as I want to try those 230 grain hybrid Bergers for awhile.

well hell , i have a 1:12 twist barrel iv had for a long time and not sure what to do with it, i wanted to use it for a 300 win mag. but...you day a 190 is the heviest i could run, thats the most i would ever need for around here. what was the best group you could get with it? longest we ever shoot around here is about 300 - 350 yards

if that's as far as you are shooting then I'd run 168 SMK's out of it , you could load them down to 3000 fps and that would be a chip shot for that bullet and it wouldent beat you up.
I shot with a guy who bought a used 308 Palma barrel with a 1-13 and rechambered it to 300 win mag , shot 155 A-max out realy fast , I think about 3400 and it was a laser to 700 yds and killed deer like a lightening bolt
