Im going to be starting my winter project of a 300blk out in a bolt gun. Looking for some info on it as far as some load data as well as some barrel info. Has anyone tried to build one on a 10 twist barrel and if so how did it shoot and could you run the 190 and 220s subsonic? Any info will help. Thanks in advance!

I went with a 1:8 twist for my 300BO. I haven't headspaced it yet, so I'm still in the load developing stages. I'll probably use 178gr Amax to try for subsonic since it will be on a bolt action.

I'm also going to try 208gr Amax as well.

I've built quite a number of 30-221's which were also known as the 300 whisper, the cartridge remington copied and got saami specs under the name 300 blackout. The throat dimensions are slightly different but otherwise its pretty much the same. I've used 1-8" twist for all of them because they were intended to be used for subsonic shooting with the heavier bullets....200-240gr. You can use the 1-10 if you are shooting supersonic but when the speed comes down the spin rate does too and with 200 gr or heavier bullets you are on the edge stability wise. If you're shooting through a brake or a suppressor its not a good idea. I've done a few suppressor repairs on rifles with 10 in twist or slower that were shooting the heavies through cans. Accuracy with the faster 8 in twist is great so why would you want to use the 10 in??? Just curiosity here....

I built a 1-8 twist rem 700 it does great with the 220s and 110s. On build options you might look at a 700 fireball action they have the extractor in a slightly different spot to aid in extracting the short case mine was a 17 fireball and I have had not problems at all. Also feeding can be a problem and I was having problems with that and made the switch to a CDi bottom metal( after robbing the AICS it was in) and ai .223 mags and have not had a single problem.

Well for one ive found some 30 cal 1-10 twist barrel blanks 18.5 long for 40 bucks shipped and im trying to keep this build to a budget. What barrels would you recommend in a 1-8 twist??

    Re: 300 Black Out Info

any preimm barrel will do fine, problem is you probably will not be able to find a 1/7 twist (wich i reccomned) in stock, and most abrrel makers are running 4-7 weeks on a custom (non-popular)barrel.

on a side note i would keep it as short as hell, 16" if your stock permits the attachment of your suppressor at that length. I would assume you will be shooting sub-sonic primariliy.

The more im thinking about it im prolly going to build it on the 1 in 10 twist im not planning on a can any time soon i like the idea of the round and have wanted one for a while if i can shoot the 178s or maybe the 190s those will do everything i need and if i do wanna run subs for the hell of it ill load some with trail boss.

So my next question is what is some good load data for slugs all the way up to the 190s?

    Re: 300 Black Out Info

I have used most of the 190-220 gr bullets, 1680 didn't cut it for me because it was too messy and crazy in extreme temps. I switched to vihtavouri n530 anywhere from 11-13gr depending on the bullet for subsonic, and n110 from 17-18gr for supersonic in the 100-110gr bullet weight range. In a bolt gun the 110 may be a viable option for subsonic loads also, but it wouldn't cycle my AR so I had to try something different.

There is a lot more support for 300BO over the Whisper even though Hornady whisper ammo states that you can shoot it out of 300BO firearms.

Guy on 300blktalk offers a 1:7 and 1:8 McGowen prefit. That is what I purchased...I went with a 1:8 twist and I don't think I'm buying another barrel just to get a 1:7 twist.

My 300blackout bolt gun should be here in a 1-2 weeks. Did a rem 700, 16.5" barrel, Krieger, 1-8. In a AICS. plan on using 208's and 220's. going to hunt with 208 Amax. I'll update ballistic info when it arrives.

Don't try Trailboss for this round, I found it would not work and I now have expierence removing stuck bullets from the bore. I am running 11.0g of N110 with a 210 bullet getting around 950 fps. This is out of a TROS 300 whisper rifle. If you are starting a build I agree that you would be best with a 7 or 8 twist for this round with sub loads.
