I chose the 300 Norma because it is less expensive to shoot and it will get me to a mile no problem. Finding some place to shoot a mile is the hard part.

Never shot the 300NM, but I do have a 338NM and its a great shooting little rifle, my first time beyond 1200yds, skipped the mile shot and hit a sub MOA target @ 2020yds, took me a few rounds but got it done, video quality is good, but I'm gonna get some better footage and I'll post it up.

The purpose of this rifle is big game hunting and shooting steel. Probably will very rarely ever go out past 1 mile with it, but I would like to be able to have success out to 2000 meters if the opportunity presented itself.

I sold my 338 Edge and now have a 300NM Imp. The Edge isn't a NM but the ballistics are close enough. I much prefer the recoil of the 230 OTM's at 3050 over the recoil I had with the 300 SMK's going 2850 fps. Accuracy has been great with the 230's as well.

This is my load as well. I'm at 0.035" off the lands in a 40° Improved case. I'm getting 3050 at 950 elevation in a 10 twist Brux.

Just an FYI concerning 30 vs 338.

I won a ELR match with my 30-375R a couple months ago with the 230 Berger hybrids going 2960 fps. We shot from 770Y to 2356Y with more than a few steels out past a mile. Hitting the 2356Y steel was the highlight of the weekend for me though.

I agree with Goin'hot about the recoil with the 30 cal/230's vs the 338 cal/300's. The recoil is very mild with my 21 lb rifle and muzzle brake.

It is not my gun, but a friends. It shot a ".328" group at 200 yards, no pics. We shot 5 groups with it that day, all the same charge, just different seating depths, this was the best group. The worst was ".774" at 200 yards. the gun was built by Chad Dixon. It will be the last group on paper he shoots with it, until the throat erodes, and we need to change the load.
Our philosophy is, if you're only gonna get 1600-2000 rounds out of a barrel, why waste barrel life shooting groups on paper. He'll probably periodically shoot some groups at longer ranges on steel to check the accuracy, and I don't think a 1 mile group is out of the realm of this bad boy.

Any ballistics calculator, or program will do it, just adjust velocities, BC, etc..
Sometimes speed wins over bc and wieght, sometimes not. As said earlier, what does one want.

Well it looks like the 338 norma drifts slightly less than the 300 norma from what I have found studying these 2 rounds. I like that the 300 norma has a better selection of bullets and a flatter trajectory. I like that the 338 norma has a better barrel life and less wind drift.

The purpose of this rifle would be for long range hunting and shooting steel targets with a maximum distance of 2000 meters in mind.

I'm not sure the answer to your question, but I'm also curious what the barrel life is for each of these cartridges. Also, what are the most common twist rates for the 2 cartridges?

Excerpt from the general post. No picture unfortunately but Cory, Frank and my other classmates were there. Rounds fit inside a roll of masking tape. There were actually five rounds fired; that fifth round was actually the first shot. Got the wind call from that and emptied the mag for the group.Had been shooting another rifle for a couple of hours with interesting results(see quoted thread)

It's still to early to tell on barrel life.

This is a near MAXIMUM load; not a starting load. Be safe and start low and work up a load that is suited to your rifle.

Preliminary testing with 220 SMK's and 86.0 gr of retumbo is chronoing 3030-3050 fps.

Original load in this rifle is a 208 A-MAX with 88.8 gr H-1000 running at 3100 fps sub .5 MOA W/28" barrel.

I use my guns for deer and elk hunting in addition of LR/ELR shooting - they have to earn their keep! So my vote goes to the 338 NM. But that 300 NM looks awfully tempting.

The 30s do have an accuracy edge over the 338s but the 338 dose hold up a tiny beter in the wind.

If you're going to be shooting a cartridge that costs 4 bucks per trigger pull, I wouldn't think that barrel life is a concern.
Just factor in the cost when buying a rifle such as this

Build one gun and have both cartridges done w 2 separate barrels. Simple. I plan to do a 300 necked to 7mm in one barrel and a 338 Lapua in a different barrel using the same stock, action, sight system and action. I love the switchbarrel concept.
