Hunting & Fishing 300 or 7mm wsm

Re: 300 or 7mm wsm

ditto on what ssatt68 said.

I own both and for factory ammo 300wsm is much easier due to the variety. However if you hand load its closer to shooters choice. Having said that I enjoy my 7wsm for both comps and hunting. Although it just got but to the back of the line in hunting since it went out in 2010.

Hope to meet ya if you get out this way reb.

Re: 300 or 7mm wsm

Personally, Id go with the 300wsm. I shoot a 300winmag and love it. But I plan on building a 30.06 and 308 in the future. I like the idea of being able to buy 308 bullets in BULK quantities to use in all my guns. I have a great feel for them, and it just makes it easier for me to keep things straight. Either caliber can tack drive, and drop anything in NA

Re: 300 or 7mm wsm

To be perectly honest unless you are sure you want a short action I would just go 300Win or 7Rem. Bother are in the identical accuracy class and both are better with the super long bullets that make the 7mm and 30 cal great.

Either one is fine on game though the bigger the game the finer the 30 cal looks.
The 200Accubond is an excellent LR hunting bullet.

Re: 300 or 7mm wsm

This is a tough call. I really like most of the 7's due to the wide selection of high bc bullets. That being said there have been a lot of good options for the 30's over the last few years.

I used to run a long action 7wsm with a 26" tube, my load was 180 bergers at 2950, it was a very accurate rifle. The last few years I have been running a 300wsm on a short action with a 22" tube. I run 208's at 2800.

Lets compare those two loads through jbm in mils and in a 10mph wind for my area of hunting

300 yards 7wsm 300wsm
drop--------0.9----1.0
wind--------0.4----0.4
ftlbs-------2650---2705

600yards 7wsm 300wsm
drop---------3.0---3.4
wind---------0.8---0.9--difference in inches is 2.3 in a 10mph wind
ftlbs-------1976---1974

800 yards 7wsm 300wsm
drop---------4.7---5.4
wind---------1.1---1.2--difference in inches is 4.4 in a 10mph wind
ftlbs--------1608---1580

As you can see the 7 is superior ballistically, however it is very close. It begs the question of how would a 7 do with a 22" barrel on a short action or vice versa. For a hunting and general all around rifle I really like the way my current 300 handles and performs.

Re: 300 or 7mm wsm

Pick your poison! They are both great. Which one are you the most confident with? I shoot 7wsm (2 of them) and 300wm. I tend to go to the 7wsm more often but have all faith in the 300wm. The 7wsm's are both GAP's, one heavy suppressed and one non typical, unsuppressed. The 300wm is a suppressed Encore.

That 7WSM non typical is the one rifle I'm buying when I hit the lottery!

Re: 300 or 7mm wsm

I've had both from GAP and they are awesome calibers. I shot 180 Accubonds out of my 300 WSM and shot deer out to 500 yards. I just got my 2nd GAP 7 WSM (non typical) and am shooting the 180 VLDs through it. I've also killed deer out to 500 yards with it also. They are both great calibers and I like the 7 WSM for longer range hunting and shooting due to the BC on the 180 VLDs. You can't go wrong with either one.
