300 win mag barrel length

I am piecing together a 300 win mag and am planning to shorten a Remington 5r. I just have a couple questions on length. I would like to keep the gun a little shorter and am using a spec war 762. Would 20-21" be a decent length? And what type of muzzle velocity could I get from reloading? Max range will be 6-800 yards.

You'll still get some velocity loss at 22". FGMM is specced for about 2900fps with a 190gr, in my 22" it runs about 2860fps. Still very very very accurate though.

sounds like leaving it at the 22" length is about as short as I would want to go.

If you reload you can get great speeds with a short barrel. Mine is 21.75" and I get 2940 ft/sec with 208 amax and 2830 ft/sec with Hornady 225 bthp. No reason to go over 22".

You guys have opened my eyes. I am literally ordering an Obermeyer for a .300 Win Mag today. You guys have made up my mind.

with those shorter barrel lengths 22" or even a 24" is it still 1/10 twist? i am looking into a new barrel for my savage 111 in .300wm and liked the shorter 24" then my 28" on there now and wondered about the twist

I did a ton of research and the sweet spot on 1/10 seems to be 24.25" - I called around, asked some smiths and then some shooters and the response was overwhelmingly 24.25...

Shooting 208 amax with H1000 at @2950...

Would it be reasonable to gain a little muzzle velocity when reloading?

I keep mine 24-26. I have a 20 308 and people often say there is no gain after 20, but my 24 shoots 100fps faster. I have to fight my smith to cut to 24'.

Why a 300 Win mag. for 600-800 yard shooting? Nothing wrong with it but a 7.62 will get you there as well.

I would like to keep the overall length as short as possible and still be able to approach a longer range. I have a 20" .308 and would like around the same length 300 WM in order to get better ballistics.
