I have a new 300 win mag and can't decide if i should shorten from 26" to 24" or 22'"the can will add 7-8" I have 2 308 cut to 18" and love the portability but it does give up some fps for the longer shots, I want to use this 300 for where the 308 , 168g Amax leave off. i will be shooting the 178 amax through the 300 win mag. any guys have any 300 win mag with 22" or 24" barrel if so what are your hand loads. thx

If you search you should find some good threads on 22" 300s and the accompanying loads. You don't have to be at 29" to enjoy it. Especially with a can on it.

This has been discussed quite heavily, use google to make a custom search. Bottom line, the guys with long barrels love them, the guys with short barrels don't understand why, because there is cases where muzzle velocities are so close its almost negligible unless your solely using the caliber at its max range.
This is quite to the contrary. This myth has been disproven time and time again. Don't go any shorter the 22" and you'll be fine. Like another member stated, the difference in velocity only matters when shooting or testing calibers at their limits. A 22" 300WM will still put a nasty hurting on steel at 1200-1300.

I shoot a lot of benchrest competitions and I never see someone with a 22" barrel win the competition. Why cut it shorter just because it is hard to carry. When you go to a match and there is a 16.5 weight limit, it's funny how the top shooters rifles weigh 16.48 lbs.
Is OP trying to build a bench gun? I didn't see anything in his posts that indicated that.
You're talking benchrest. This isn't re loaders nest forums. A lot of us shoot tactical competitions with movement and jamming a barrel in and out of shooting ports and lugging it around all over the place. 300 Wm typically won't be in these matches but even just target shooting in the field/hunting you don't want to lug a 30" straight bull barrel around. If this was for benchrest sure, go all out and maximize the caliber

There you go, you said it yourself.....bench rest. You are comparing a competition rifle that needs every bit of barrel length,weight,and velocity to be competitive. I agree with you a 100% if OP was building a bench gun but it doesn't appear he is. From his projectile choice and suppressor use it appears this gun will probably be more suited for longer range hunting or banging steel.
If your sitting on a bench or laying prone all the time nothing wrong with shooting a rifle that's 20lbs and has a 36" barrel (suppressor included) but for hunting or shooting steel from different positions it sucks.

Been to 1 mile, routinely to 1,500.
Even 24" is long and a little off balance with a 19 oz can on the end.
I would not go less than 22"

this will be for some long shots on steel and hunting.
have a few places where i will be hunting 800-1200
but no bench rest
will shoot with a can almost all the time. so the goal is to stay around 1/2 moa groups portability , and hunting.
and still out perform my 308 win. at distance

I have a 22.5" barreled 300wm that I run with a Surefire SOCOM can. I shoot out to 1400 yards regularly. My hunting partner has a 300wm with a 26" barrel and our dope is not that much different from each other. I have no regrets going shorter on my 300 build.
The last 4 inches of barrel length enable access to the last 100 yards of the caliber's range.
If you don't plan on shooting at maximum distance barrel length is not so much of an issue.
On the other hand, muzzle report will double when the last 4 inches of the barrel are removed.

Hey just hunting for some load data. I have a22” barrel on my new win mag. What was working for you? What was your twist rate? Had a Tikka Tactical (300WM of course) with 24 in barrel, went out to 1000 m easily, and beyond, with quite a light load. Even during the wintertime. So it was more than enough barrel for me.
