Alright, barrel is mostly broke in and now i'm trying to figure out a good load. I have a couple varieties of powders and bullets so far, just wondering where to start with powders. I have AMAX 178's and Berger 210 VLD's. Powders i have are Hodgdon H1000, Hodgdon 4831sc, and IMR 4831. i'm needing to make one of these combos work here soon now that i have the Elk hunt coming up in two weeks. would have got it done sooner if i would have had my rifle. Any thoughts on where to start? also kinda nervous on how far to seat the VLD's. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED.

for elk I'd go with the 210 vld with H1000.You can start at 74gn and work up from there.Being that your hunting you will want them close to mag length so holding them long is out.

+1^^^. I have jumped the 210vld up to .215" with good accuracy as long as the runout is less than .002". I have found them to be most accurate in the 2950fps range with H-1000, & Retumbo.

So i should get an empty brass with a bullet in it and chamber it in the gun to see how the deep it sets then back off how much? , <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: 5R milspec</div><div class="ubbcode-body">for elk I'd go with the 210 vld with H1000.You can start at 74gn and work up from there.Being that your hunting you will want them close to mag length so holding them long is out.</div></div>

Doing it that way is likely to cause inconstant results and misreadings - the bullet will no doubt get snagged in the lands when you try and extract it giving a false reading. The hornady comparator kit is the way to go for accurately measuring distance to the lands.

As 5r said for hunting you want to seat them to mag length for functionality. Develop your hunting load on this basis.

I have been loading IMR4350 for years, but found that there are tremendous spikes in velocity when spring and summer get here...When temperatures are around 55-65 degrees, or cooler, velocity for my 190 grain SMK is about 2960 fps. When the temperature gets over 75-80 degrees, velocity goes up to over 3100 fps. As soon as I discovered the cause of the sticky bolt lift, I quit shooting this ammo in warm weather. I'll finish out the last 100 rounds for this batch of ammo, then seek a less temperature sensitive powder.

Bigwheels gets fabulous results with his H1000 load, so I'm strongly considering that loading.
