I'm in the process of acquiring parts and components for my first 300 WM.

Barrel is going to be a 28 inch Brux 10 twist. I'm gonna chamber it with the PTG 300 Tac Match reamer.

I'm thinking of started out with Bergers in the 210 range and H1000.

Do you guys think that one brand of brass is better than the others? If so why? I'd prefer to run domestic brass, but I'll buy the Norma if I have to.

I have a preference for skim turning all of my necks and using bushing dies. Recommendations for a couple different bushing sizes for me to order would be appreciated.

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

While I have used WW for many years without a problem, I bought some Nosler, (just because) and in my opinion, it is every bit as good as any Lapua I have ever owned. Some people say the exact origin is a bit murky, perhaps it is actually made by Norma, I don't know? But, it does not look like the Norma brass I have use, in the past (220Swift) so maybe somebody knows more about the subject than I? But, I can judge brass as well as the next man, and the Nosler 300WM I own is damned near perfection. BB

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

When I started with the 300WM I bought up a bunch of Hornady Match brass. Mainly because I was a dealer at the time and it was getting rave reviews. It has been good to me. My primary loads are 165 and 190s. But to each his (or her) own.

Good luck.

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

I'm using RWS brass and it's the shit, nice and thick, flash holes are all uniform, the weight of the brass is almost dead on from peice to peice... Couldn't be happier. As for your load that's the same set up I use 210 bergers, H1000 75grains

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

I run 72.9 r22 out of Winchester brass with 208 amaxs. Get 4 loads and chunk em. Just more prep. But if you your part it will too. Sub moa at 1200 yards with 3 x fired win brass this past Tuesday. Just depends on how willing you are to fully prep the cheaper brass due to more time getting Them ready

Just wondering why you throw them away after four firings. Is it loose primer pockets?
If it is swelling at the belt then you should try the Innovative Technologies resizing die. I just started using one and it works very well.
My current load is 78 gr Retumbo with the Berger 230 OTM.

Are the 230's getting into the realm of diminished returns due to lower velocity, or do you guys think they show a significant advantage over the 210's. Also, do they stabilize in a 10 twist in thick air.

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

I won a comp last month using them out to 1000 yards. The big advantage I see is wind bucking. They are a really high BC and I am pushing them at 2850.
My altitude is about 400' above sea level and the air here is as thick as it gets anywhere, as humidity this time of year is a killer.

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

The primer pockets. You nailed it. After 2 firings a little loose,3 : kinda loose 4 : kaput. 72.9 is a hot load with r22 especially in ms summers. The 208s are running 2935 fps. But that is where my acc node is and it will shoot out to damn near a mile. Not that I ever would or need too. 210 vlds I load 72.7 and they are right at 2900. Very very very accurate not to mention will make any animal it hits explode. Bad ass bullets those bergers.

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

Not to be a smart ass, but the 208 amax has a bc of .648 and cost 17 $ less than 210 vlds which bc is .631. Not to mention you don't have to worry about your coal changing from un uniformed metplates.

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

I use Winchester brass and neck size with a 329 for magazine fed and 331 for single feed.
Before you buy too many 210s, I suggest you try the Berger hybrid 215s or 230s.

If $ is an issue, the Hornady 208s shoot real flat, cost less. I think I like the newer 225 boat tail better though.

Amax is a nice bullet, one that BC is a little higher than actual and two I have currently 4 different lots of 210 bergers on my shelf right now and I can pick a bullet out of any box and they all weight exactly the same... You get what you pay for

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

I think part of your question was what size bushing dies? I use .333 on most cases & .332 on the rest. Firm ,but not too tight. The tighter I went, the more spresd.

Okay, I accept that. My question is; what if you weigh the Amax's and shoot them in groups? If the AMax BC is wrong, what do you think it should be?

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

Thanks for the info on the bushings, fellas. The opinions on bullets are welcome as well.

I'm leaning towards trying Bergers first. I have several fast twist 22's for the bulk of my shooting. This rifle is for when I'm feeling sadistic. I don't mind paying for the Bergers for a rifle that doesn't see frequent use.

Look at the definition of G1 v G7 on Berger's web site. Does Hornady give you a G7? I would be surprised, once all the variables shake out, that the 208 Amax beats out the 210 Berger on anything but cost.
Berger bullets have been the most consistent "out of the box" mass manufactured bullets I have found. I have had Amax bullets go all over the scale just inside one box of a hundred.

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

The 208 Bc is right on. Shot it at the Cup and data using the factory G1 Bc with jbm was on to 1150 yards which was the farthest we shot.

Re: 300 Win Mag questions

Right on Rob01! I haven't read mr litzs writing and I LOVE the 210 vlds for lr shots on deer, I was simply stating that they are more cost effective and every bit as capable as vlds in terms of long range capabilitiy.
