New to the win mag here. I have a rifle in progress being pieced together. Defiance Deviant action on order, Proof Research 1:10 22" barrel, Manners T2, Badger FTE brake. With my action date of 01/14 I've got a while to gather components. I've got some Norma brass coming and want to build some long range ammo to go with it. First off, I'm a basic reloader. I've been loading handgun for 20+ years and rifle for a couple. Most of my loading has been on a progressive Dillon 550. I do have a single stage press that will be used for the 300. My powder will be thrown with an RCBS chargemaster. First off, with the Norma brass do I need to uniform the flash holes/primer pockets? Big deal or not? The 208 AMAX is an inexpensive bullet that I've run the numbers with and seems a good all around projo, what's the consensus with this bullet? Powder? I want to settle on one but ideally it would have some use in my 308s as well even if not optimal. ( we've all seen the component crunch ) Primers? I have a bunch of CCI LR primers and some Benchrest LR, a few Mag LR as well. What should I stock up on? Redding 3 die set for my rig or should I spring for something else? Also any good resources to educate me from a bulk rifle reloader to a precision rifle reloader would be helpful. In all this even though budget is a concern I've learned to cry once and buy the right stuff the first time. So please steer me in the right direction. My goals here are a consistent 1K yard performance ( I can shoot this distance weekly )and an eventual 1760 yard bang on steel. I dont necessarily need to load for the 1m shot all the time but it's something I would eventually like to achieve and not just by luck.

Boy, do I envy you! 208 amax over H1000 is very popular and my recommendation.
What 308 bullet do you shoot? I don't see one powder covering a 175 gr 308 and 208 gr win mag. Varget and H1000 would be two of the most popular. I use both those powders and CCI magnum primers in the mag, but I think any LR would work.
I use win brass and do a full prep. I don't know Norma, but it's all about how detailed you want to get. Accuracy results from a total combination of many factors. I like this site and accurate shooter for web info. You got at least one good loading manual?
you can always call Hornady, Sinclair, Dillon, Redding, for advice. Good luck!

With Norma, I just load em up and shoot them. After the first firing I bump the shoulder back 3/1000s and use a bushing. (.334 or .332 , can't remember) Wiyh the 208 amax , I've found that they shoot best 20 to 40/1000's off the lands. I have several .300 win mags and I've always found a node anywhere from 75.8 to 76.6 h1000. Using 215 fgm primers. A lot of guys push them harder but this is just my best results using this particular powder. I've had really good luck using 72.4 pp 4000 mr. It's very accurate and is pushing em 2950 from a 26" bbl. however it is temp sensitive. I'd just stick with the h1000 and find you a good load. Good luck. AS

My original Rem 700 factory barrel (26") ran Berrger 230 match with 75gn of H1000 at 2900fps, rebarreled with a Bartlein (26" w/ brake) and nyrtride treat, pressures were high as hell, after 100 rnds settled in with a Berger Hybrid 230gn, 70gn H1000 at 2650 fps.
The local guru has a pet load of 180gn swift sirroco II with 68.5gn IMR 4350
Case volume can vary up to 9gn from RWS to Win, less volume higher pressure.
Used mag primers for a long time but found more consistancy with LR.
Can't go wrong with Norma.

Your dead on with your RWS assessment. I had some which in a factory chamber I had to physically beat the bolt open with a mallet. This is with 74 grains of h1000 and a 208. A mild load to say the least. Went back to Norma and Rp.
