Local place has a new R700 XCR long range tactical in 300 win mag on clearance. I have an older XCR LR in 223 and love the gun. I've never had a magnum before. I know they have a short barrel life so I am wondering if I bought it shot the barrel out would I be able to go to a non-magnum? Would I have to change the bolt out when the time came to rebarrel? I'm guessing the face is to large for non magnums?
Just curious.

300 wm doesnt have that short a life. Between that and the fact its a magnum, means people usually aren’t smoking through barrels on a regular basis. In fact it’s pretty rare.

You could go to another shorter case that has a magnum case head. The WSM’s, a 6.5 PRC, etc. You’d have to alter the bolt face or get a new bolt to run the smaller cases like 6.5 creed or .308.

If it's a 300 wm it will be a long action receiver with a magnum bolt. If you rebarrel for another 300wm or 300prc etc they all use the same magnum bolt.

If you want to rebarrel it for a 308 or 6.5 or etc you will need a standard bolt. I also would just get a short action receiver as well. If you're not intending to do something big boom.

If I were you, when its rebarrel time go 300PRC, leave your bolt alone and have fun..but thats me, im waiting on a 300wm 700 I have to "get tired of" then its 300PRC time🤫
