I've ALWAYS wanted a 300 win mag but, couldn't justify it until recently...Finally "took the plunge" and I'm happy happy happy.
I've been through a MRAD, a couple custom 338's and finally just had an epiphany one day and said "Let's do it".
Stiller Tac 300, 20 MOA base, AICS AX, Bartlein 1/10 M24 26", PWS Brake, Spuhr mount, Nightforce 5.5-22x56...Has very very very quickly, become my favorite.
Right now I'm shooting a 178gr BTHP, 68g AA4350 -- Sub 1/2moa at 200 all day. Been playing around with 168gr...
It's a laser.
Best part is I have a 308 so, getting loads setup for both is very simple.
I would recommend a 300WM to anyone that wants a step up from a 308 but, doesn't want to get into 338's.

It shoots flatter and you'll get out further than a 308. Its also cheaper to shoot that a 338 lapua and will get you close to the same performance with a 220 gr bullet, if loaded right. There just fun.
I built a .300 just for the 230 bergers. I had a .338 lapua and like the op I couldn't afford it. Put a 30" broughton 5c 1:10 on a 700 trued action with a hs precision stock and a Bushnell XRS. Out to 1500 yards or so it's flatter than the .338 shooting 300 grain bullets. It's at least half the price of a .338 to load for and for what I do is perfect. Not that I'll ever do it but it'll shoot to about 2,000 yards supersonic. Just what I did to get the performance of the .338 lapua without killing my wallet.....
used to use a factory rem sendero with 175 mkings 75.4grs wmr powder match load and hunting 180 b-tip 73grs 2213 adi powder (1/2 at 200m).
with 100 zero to 1000yards was 27 mins up on the scope and used half the wind of a 308 with 155, i used to ask the target shooters how much wind and halfed it.
was looking at getting another but mate talked me into a 260 rem so got a savage m12lrp coming. still miss the big banger.

My 300 Win Mag., gets a lot of "use". I bought her, instead of the .338 Lapua, because of the "cost factor", of initial purchase, and reloading cost. I shoot .308s,, mostly, and the "parts", are the same. Bullets,primers, and powder are close.Marketing, is something "left " to the sellers. Buyers, like myself, have always liked the 300 Mag, for the stated reasons. I can load 168's, and 208"s in both and be happy. Don't get caught up, in "hype". There is a Lot of "push" for different cartridges, from time to time.6.8, is the "newest trend". Blah blah.I'm very happy with the 30 cals. Although, I'm getting a 'little wet", for a .270., or a .243. I "hear good things," about the .260.. I "looked" at the .338. and the .50 cal, but the cost went through the roof, from my perspective. I went with the .300 Win Mag. I'm a "cheap sob". So many guns, so little time.

I take a 308 & 300wm every time I go out. My everyday range goes 1178 yards and I have access to a 1400 yard parcel. My 300 will go a mile, but I have not found the location. As stated, the 300 is a solid jump from 308. My 208 AMAX load is solid.

That's a fine looking build. Very sweet.
I shoot both the 338LM and the 300 Win Short Mag. Other than the price of brass, there isn't a ton of price difference is shooting them. Both are stock rifles. Browning A-Bolt 300wsm and Savage 110FCP-HS 338LM. The 300 runs me about $0.70 a round and the 338 runs about $0.90 a round to reload minus the brass cost on both.If I run through 100 rounds in a day at the range, that comes up to $20 difference for the day.
ME, Just me. I've seen the "Mags". Every time I "hit an airport" I buy the Mags., They're promoting 6.8, for the AR. I've always liked the 308. Just me.It's a standard shell, that's Easy to load, and the .300 Win Mag, shoots the same bullets. That's easy, for me. I'm just "one little opinion" here. Don't get in a twit.

-> Browning A-bolt Stainless Stalker (black Teflon coated) W/ BOSS brake, a plastic stock and a Browning laminated thumbhole stock
Great cartridge, the .300 Win mag. BUT - the new .300 Norma mag is (IMHO) the best 30. caliber long range cartridge out there, bar none, not 300 RUM, not 300 Weatherby, none of them will equal the .300 Norma mag., ESPECIALLY with a 230 gr. Barnes Tactical Hybrid bullet moving our at about 2,800 fps. to 3,000 fps.
I will likely get my DTA in .300 NM for all those reasons and its superb accuracy. Its shoulder angle contributes to that. True the .338 LM will have more energy at 1,500 meters but not better balistics. Are we knocking down steel plates or shooting THROUGH them? Exactly.
No need for the .338 LM's energy unless you have vehicles to disable and/or a large bank account.
That said a .300 WM with the new Berger 230 gr. Hybrid Tactical bullets and H 1000 powder will give amazing ballistics if you still like that cartridge.

Now, here we go, with "another cartridge" to look at. I've got the 300 Win mag, and the 300 weatherby. Now I "have to look at" the 300 Norma Mag. I should stop reading these threads. Seems every time I do, it costs me another 2 grand. What's "your formula", for the 230s. I tried H1000, with 208s, and came up with poor results, on the first few range sessions.I know I've got to do the ladder test, for my gun, but a "place to start", would be nice. OK So I looked at the "stats", for the 300 RUM. They look nice.Not finding a 300 Norma Mag. Found the 308 Norma Mag, but the "ballistics of the 300 Win Mag, seem better.

I will probably pretty much duplicate my .308 (Rem 700 action and heavy barrel, Manners T-4A, and Viper PST 6-24) but in .300 Win Mag. May go with a custom action and nice barrel right off. My .308 was because I had a Remington PS-1 to start with.
I lust after a .338 Lapua Mag, but have NO reason to have one. And yes, they do seem to be expensive to shoot.

I'm not trying to be mean, but don't get your writing (typing) confused with proper typing. It's not proper, and it's very hard to understand.
That sounds like a good set up. A brake, may help, with the recoil< but I didn't find it offensive. A break, may get your spotter to quit, but it helps.

I like the .300 mag. Get a rem 700 police, 5r, or sendero, or a savage 110FCP with the HS stock, add sierra 190 MK's and H4831 or R22, or 208 amaxes and H1000. It will work like a champ.
I need a brake to shoot it for any amount of time at the bench, YMMV. I went with the Savage 110 and have been pleased. the .308 is cheaper and easier, but the .300 mag seems to me like more of an incremental step up from the .308, whereas the .338 lapua is a monumental step up.

The 300 is my favorite by far. The last one I built was crazy fast barrel. It was a krieger 27.5" amu taper. On a tried r700 and I worked on loads for a while but I finally settled on 80.5 of h1000 under a 208. *********please do not use this load, unless you work up to it***********

I sold that rifle to a guy in the service and getting out and wanted a big heavy build. It was just too heavy for me.
Currently I am having blackops barrel a r700 with their barrel and reamer in a 24" barrel designed for the 190 smk. It will live in a kmw sentinel. I decided to put the pig bolt with the m16 extractor in it as I tend to like hot loads. <man I wanted to put hot in "" >.

Yep,....300WM build in progress. 27" Bartlein, straight throat reamer for 14 secant 210gr bullets. AIAW long chassis. Should be good to go some real distance and way cheaper to feed than a 338LM.
Robert sure knows what he is "doing". I miss my 6.5x47.

Russell at SSC is building me a new 300 on a stiller tac300 right now. Broughton 5c and a manners. He built me a 308 identical to it but with 20" barrel, it's ab absolute tack driver. He also has my 20" 300wm in his shop, I'm gonna get a new stock put on it. 300wm is an awesome round
I just got off the phone with Robert Gradous this morning and he will build me a 300 WM / 7-300WM switch barrel on a Surgeon 1086R action. Bob L. Swagger's stick was my inspiration.
