Hey guys I've been having a little bit of trouble trying to choose a new rifle. I'm fairly new to the precision world but I've got my heart set on a .300 WM. What do you guys think would be a good choice for someone like myself? Help would be so much appreciated. Thankyou

im looking to spend under 5 thousand if possible. my local range goes out to 900m and majority of my shooting will be there. I have been suggested a Savage BA110 or Remington 700. i just would love to know what some of my choices out there are.
With a $5k budget me personally I wouldn't be using no savage or remington action. I'd be going for a custom action all the way 
. With a rifle of that kind of build I'd be hand loading as well (I'd hand load even a factory rifle for max accuracy). There are literally tons of choices out there when it comes to actions, barrels, triggers, stocks ect. Everyones opinions will vary on what's best when it comes to these components. My advice to you is start doing your research on actions, barrels, scopes, stocks ect and draw your own conclusion of what you want. In the end you have to be happy with it no one else!

TRG 42 IMHO, if you can get behind one for a test drive.
its a factory gun, you can find them lightly used for 2.5k throw a scope and your under your 5k. plus resale is always there if needed

Do you hand load? if you don't i wouldn't recommend the 300wm. Seating depth plays a huge role in accuracy with this cartridge, as the throats can be on the deep side. I bought a box of FGMM and the jump made this round shoot about 2.5in at 100yds. I used the bullet puller and reset them all .030off and groups shrunk to inch. Now that's just my rifle. You state you are fairly new to the precision shooting, what other rifles, calibers do you have?
Thanks for all the comments guys those all look like real nice guns but being an Australian resident I'm not too sure of the availability of some of the suggestions. Has anybody had any experience with the Armalite AR-30?? They don't look too bad for the money and are pretty readily available.

He's talking about the AR-30 a bolt action gun by Armalite. I would say for the budget you have, go full custom. If you like Chasis's you could call Chris at Drake. You would be at 5k without glass and have a sweet setup. Or as mentioned the TG-42 is great, last one I saw in .300wm was $3800.
For $5000 you could build a kickass custom 300wm. It's what I did for my first precision rifle, and I've never looked back. With a muzzle brake on mine, I can shoot it all day long.
I just did a full custom .308 as follows:

I'm still curious as to why specifically a 300 WM. Do you have experience with one? Do you reload?
You state you are new to the precision world, have you tried other calibers? Not trying to pick a fight or anything, but there are other calibers that are cheaper to feed and easier to learn on. What specifically is your intended purpose for the rifle? Is it just for target shooting?

yes i have shot heaps of calibers from .270 right up to a .416 Barrett. I dont know why i have just always taken a shine to the .300WM, its just a personal preference.

Then I would look at the factory rifles you mentioned within the aspect of barrel replacement down the line. There is always the Remington vs Savage argument going on, but I have no idea what is available in Australia. Your choice should be determined by long term after-market availability. The other issue will be are you happy with the factory stock and do replacements reasonably exist?

I would go Savage. Just me, but that is what I would do.
Full disclosure - I own several Savages.
Ease of barrel swaps and bolt head replacements. I like the PTG bolt heads, so whenever I swap a barrel, I swap out bolt heads. Minimal tools required. Re-chambering may also require a bolt head swap, not a big issue with a Savage.
That said - all those parts and tools are readily available here.
With that budget I would have Gap build you a really nice custom .300 WM. You can also look in the for sale section, you see super nice rifles there all the time.
You could go with a Surgeon Scalpel and never look back. You won't be disappointed. I love mine.

I would say savage as I own one also. But if I had 5000 I would definitely go with a gap built gun! If you wanted to tinker and save money I would say savage but I wouldn't do a 110ba. I have a hunter xp with a criterion barrel egw base seekins rings manners stock and a vortex razor.I only shoot factory ammo for now I can get 3/4 moa with $20 a box ammo with fgmm it goes to 1/2 moa.
If I had to choose only between those 2 that armalite is guaranteeing 1/4-3/4 moa at 300 yards! That's pretty damn good if u ask me but I'd still want a full custom at the budget you have.
I also live in Australia and im new to the world of precision shooting and ran into the same problems of availability. I have already built my rifle, its a stock rem 700 308 dropped into an AICS with a nightforce F1.

I looked at that "guarantee" awhile back. No where could I actually find it to be an actual guarantee.
The problem with that 5k budget - still need optics. A 5k rifle and no optics is not an optimal solution. Look at what the OP stated his options were. Custom builds were not on the list. He stated he was in Australia folks!
If your other option is Remington, I'd look into, and see if your dealer can order a Remington MilSpec 5R in 300WM. I don't have any experience with the 5R in 300WM, but the 5R in 308 is one of the most accurate factory rifles available, and often matching the accuracy of a full custom rifle costing four times as much.

Guess we were posting at the same time. Is the Savage in stock? Have you had a chance to handle it?
Best I can tell you then - find a way to spend a little more time with them. Everything in this sport is about confidence. Figure out what specifically you aren't sure of and research it. I have yet to see a factory rifle that I'm 100% thrilled with. Something needs replaced almost immediately be it the stock, a trigger adjustment or the whole damn trigger. But something.
Good luck with this one. If you need after-market parts, best research availability of those too.
Why are they the only two available to you? Any dealer worth their salt should be able to get in what ever you want
