I am getting 2820 fps with a very low SD and ES with 71.5 gr of Norma 217 out of a 28" Krieger 5R. This load is just before pressure signs show up and is very accurate. Does 2820 seem a little slow? I am thinking 3000 fps sounds more like it. I am considering working up a new load with Retumbo as H1000 performed the same as N-217 but with a much higher ES. The problem is barrel life with a 300WM. I am already 247 rounds into it. What do the experts say?

Ryguy,

2820 is not really slow it is not fast either for a 300 win. I would say your in the ballpark for a 210 berger. I have been loading 210 bergers as long as they have been making them in th 300 win. Mag. Mine gets. Steady diet of 210 gr vld under 72.3 gr of imr7828. With 215m primers in winchester brass. I have a custom made hart rifle with 28" hart tube plus a brake. I get low es and get 2890 fps as my average vel. If you have a good barrel do not worry about burning it out. I have about 3000 rounds thru mine give or take 100 rounds The gun is 20 years old. Now i have tried a lot o combo's with these 210's over the years but th 7828 seem to work the best. I have got a few hot loads with retumbo 82.0 gr (that is really packing it in) and you woul need to start much lower than that and i got 3050 fps with that and it shoots pretty good also. But you will have flat primers for sure. I went away from that because it was pretty stout and out to 1000 yards acc. Was the same either way 1/2 to 3/4 moa all day long.

Now lately i have been playing with the 230 gr bergers and i have them leaving the gun at 2850 with 74.2 gr of h1000. They seem to shoot well also but i have yet to try that load past 300 yards. I hope this helps if you would like other 300 win loads or want to know what i have tried let me know.

I am running 74.4 gr. of H1000 out TAC 300 with a 26" bbl which is giving me 2,840 fps with the 210's. Very accurate load with SD's in the high single digits. Before I could get my hands on some H1000 was using 7828SSC. Load was 75 gr. with both 210 Berger LRBT and 208 AMAX. SD's were lower than with H1000 and very accurate but it was more temperature sensitive than the H1000. Would't get hung up on chasing MV and would try to find the load that gives you the best accuracy. Did an OCW test on the rifle using H1000 planning a 5 shot round robin test. Became apparent after 3 rounds which load worked best.

Seems pretty slow to me. I get 2850 from with 208 amaxes and H1000, from a 24" barrel. If you're gonna deal with the recoil, blast, expense of the 300 WM and a long barrel I'd want those vids moving faster. On another note, if you moved to a slower burning powder wouldn't that extend barrel life?

2800 muzzle velocity will keep you super sonic maybe 1100 or 1200 yards...? What else do you want? What do your 5 shot groups look like? What range are you shooting it? What is your intended purpose?

I just discussed this on another thread and my dope was way off according to Applied Ballistics which led me to believe my chrono was giving inaccurate readings. Now I am aware that my chrono is known to be junk. According to the AB app, my velocity is 2985. My last 5 shot group measured 1.057 at 300 yards. Who really knows why the trajectory was so far off from what the ballistics calculator was telling me but when I matched the velocity to the trajectory, it came out to 2985. Im shooting 1000 and under so I can probably afford to find the low node and save myself some barrel wear.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Good luck.

Not telling you 1" groups at 300 yards is not what you want but you still may want to try the 230OTM or Hybrid with Retumbo. Especially if yours is a 1 in 10 twist. My Surgeon wears a 1 in 10 Krieger and I found a real sweet spot at just under 2850 with them. I have been faster but the load is better taking a little off. Farthest so far is 1000 yards and they shoot great.

How long is your barrel?
