300 WM accuracy

Hey Gents,

I am wanting to build a custom botl action hunting rifle in 300 Win Mag (basically a Rem 700 clone made of aftermarket parts), I want it to have a 20in bbl. All the bbl's in this caliber i see online are around 26in or more in length. Is there any accuracy issue with having a 20in bbl in 300WM?

I think this type of bolt action rifle would be best to suit my all-around hunting needs...i live in north idaho and hear a 300WM would basically work for anything I would want to hunt in this state. thats the goal.

Any and all thoughts you have on this matter would be appreciated.
thanks very much,
Brent S.

Re: 300 WM accuracy

i think i have seen a few threads in regards to this subject on here. from what i gathered you may not get full powder burn with a 20 inch with some loads.

from what i was reading on the last post i saw on here was that a 22" barrel in 300 win mag would be considered a "shorty" in that caliber.

of course with a 20" barrel you will still be shooting 190 grain bullets faster than a 308 shoots 175s most likely but you may have problems getting those heavier bullets up to speed in such a short barrel.

hand loading with a faster burn powder could help with the issue of not getting a full burn like you may see with factory ammo.

like a said though. i just read about it and am also interested in building a shorty 300 win.

Re: 300 WM accuracy

yea the tac ops article was what was posted on the other thread as well. a pretty good read.

so all in all i guess it just depends on what you intend to use the rifle for and what ammo you intend to shoot.

Re: 300 WM accuracy

Mike Bush @ Black Ops Tech has developed some new barrel technology to make a 20" 300WM run like a scalded dog. I can't post his numbers but check out his Jaeger rifle....

I run a 22" 300WSM for hunting coyotes now. I am seeing 3100 fps with 155gr scenars. And that is my mild load!

Re: 300 WM accuracy

Got to agree with KYS338 on this one and you don't live all that far from Columbia Falls, Montana so you can visit and see the rifle yourself. I have shot that 20"300WM Blackops rifle and I was thoroughly impressed on its accuracy and lack of recoil. Give him a call and let Mike Bush tell you himself. I have a friend out in Missouri that has a Blackops 300WM and is always talking about how accurate that rifle is. I can't remember the length of the barrel but he may chime in here if he wants and he can tell you how it has worked out for him.

Re: 300 WM accuracy

I have a Tactical Rifles 300wm in a 20" and it shoots like a dream. The rifle is a 1/4 MOA rifle all day with hand loads. It does have lower velocity compared to a 26" but it is so handy.I am getting 2815 ft/sec with 208 AMAX at sea level. That is almost 300ft/sec faster than my 308 :)And the shorty win mag rings steel at a 850 yards (the longest range i have around me) with authority.

Re: 300 WM accuracy

I would take one of these ppl up on actually shooting a short-barrel .300 mag before you actually put money into it. You mention that you have "heard" about the .300 mag. you might be a little impressed by the recoil of the caliber and the blast out of a short barrel. there's a reason that 20" barrel .308's fly off the shelves, but none of the factory manufacturers make a .300 mag with that barrel length.

there was a thread on here a couple months ago by a guy who had built I believe a 22" savage in .300 mag. the rifle looked really good, and if IRC he was getting good velocity.

The 20" 300 WM JAEGER that we have is launching the A191 Mod 0 and Mod 1 Ammo at the exact same velocities. We're building one for KYS338 and he's correct about the barrel we're using, but the chamber reamer is quite different also.

I developed the platform specific to the Military loads, but I'm working with McCourt Munitions to develop loads that will be available to the masses through BlackOps Technologies as part of the package.

I'm also just finishing the first two prototypes of the 22" 338 LM JAEGER.

ChristProvides, I'm only a three hour drive away and can drive the rifle over for you to shoot if you'd like. It'll be a good reason to get out of the shop for a day. Let me know and we can work out the details.

Re: 300 WM accuracy

Hey Mike,
thanks for the response! i like the idea of your 20in bbl!
I could possibly do the 22in in 300WM too.

I just checked your site: the Jaeger is a pretty lady indeed! the whole package is way out of my price range though.... do you sell the just bbl by itself? Also is it a bull barrel only or do they come with the thinner steel too? just trying to find the right option for accuracy and not too much weight for mountain hunting trips.

let me know, and if you feel like heading over to idaho please do, ill spring for lunch even

That's a helluva offer Mike, WOW!

Can't wait to see the prototypes you've got brewing, you're going to bankrupt me.

The JAEGER uses a heavier MTU style contour, but we've built a number of hunting rifles with lighter contours. The caveat for the hunting rifles is the chamber won't like the commercially loaded hunting rounds; you'll have to custom load for it. This won't be an issue, as Andrew McCourt has already designed a load for the hunting rifles.

The end of next week could be open for me with a little re-arranging. Let's stay in touch and I'll plan a drive over, or fly a small plane over and land in Hayden.

Thanks Guy. I'll post up the 338 JAEGER in a week or so.

Re: 300 WM accuracy

Brent,
I have a BlackOps 300wm that I picked up in late July or early Aug. and it is built on a Rem 700 with a 24 inch bbl. When I picked this rifle up, I thought it would just be a hunting rifle versus a "lets go shoot and have fun" rifle. I could not have been more wrong if I tried. A friend called the other day and wanted to shoot @ 800 and 1000, so I got some shells, the 300wm and away I went. Three different builders on display and while everybody had a good day, there are several things that Mike does that you don't notice until around others. One of these things I plan on calling and talking with him today about.

Anyway, I have nearly 600 rounds down this bbl, and when it is gone I will have Mike re-barrel with a 20 inch bbl.

Take Mike up on his offer to shoot the 20 rifle and you will be looking at what you can do without to own a rifle such as this. I mean really, do the kids need shoes this winter?

Good luck with this.
