Ok, I have learned that 168's are a great common size bullet for .308's. I am getting started on my new 300 WM. Now I have to learn the favored bullet for this gun. Savage 110 BA, bolt gun. Gonna be shooting targets for now, out to 400-600 yds. Kinda in a small time "sniper training". Would I aim for 190, 200, 208 gr A-Max? Like I said, I know that you can't go wrong with 168' s in 308. Just trying to learn what the "sweet bullet" might be for the 300, if there is one. Thanks.

For 400-600 yards you can use anything. That is short range for the 300WM but if you were looking to get one load worked up that will work from 100 yards to a mile then the 208 AMAX will work very well. It has a good BC and is very accurate.

Thanks Rob01. That's the kinda info I need. Yes, someday I will reach out to 800-1000, when I can reach that far. My range only goes to 400. Looking for someone in NW Louisiana that has land to get a 1000 yd lane set up. I would help with dirt work for berms.

if your limited to that distance give the hornady 178 bthp a hard look, you can start with a mild load and as your
recoil management improves you can step it up to a max load and you won't be giving anything up in bc to the 190 smk
then on to the 208 amax.
h4831 would be my choice for the 178's and h1000 for the 208's.
personally i see no reason to run a 190 in a 300 anymore since that 178 came to light, unless your barrel don't like them.
but maybe i'm missing something ?

Good point. 12 less grains in weight means more speed and basically the same BC as the 190. And you can shoot the 178 BTHP in your .308 as well.

Thanks sakobob! Good info, as always from this site. I'll use it wisely. I don't think recoil should be as bad as I thought. This gun has a specially designed brake. And I'm gonna get a limbsaver also. I have H100 and H 4831SC. Sounds like I need some brass.

In NW Louisiana, you might check out Long Range Alley, they go to 1000yds
2007 Hwy. 5
Grand Cane, LA 71032
Pro Shop Hours: Mon -Sun: 8AM - 5PM
Range Hours: Mon-Sun: Sun up to Sun down

I thought about the Ling Range Alley. It's an hour from me. I have to go north around the Red River, then south a ways. Such a pain when it's probly only 30 miles straight west of me.

H1000, 208 amax, and don't look back. IMHO , the 208 amax is one of the BEST bullets out there for the .300 win mag. Yeah, you can have the 178's zooming with IMR 4350 ect.. But if you plan on shooting at farther and farther distances as your skills progress, why not run the 208?? With a BC of .648, it's the best bullet you can get for the $ and it will save your bbl a good bit of life. To each his own, and in the end it's up to you. But if it were me, I'd choose ONE bullet, ONE powder that will do everything you need it to and stick with it. That will make you ALOT more knowledgeable about wind corrections , bullet drop, ect ect... And in the end IMO make you a heck of alot better with that particular rifle.

Thanks Aimsmall55. I'm leaning in that direction. I do like the idea of one bullet and one powder. More able to load up that way. Too many options to get all confused. I like to keep it simple and get really good at it. Thanks again. Hey, what brass do you like? I see Lapua doesn't make for the 300.

Well, I prefer Norma brass and Remington brass. I like Nosler but its costly. Win brass will work just fine but with it and Remington brass, you have to prep it more. I would get whatever brass you can, because there's not a whole lot out there right now as far as I can see. I may be wrong. You can probably ask around and get some leads from folks on here. There's always somebody who knows where you can find brass.

i would shy away from federal brass,as the primer pockets won't last the best i've done on them has been 5 with most being
left behind at the 4th reload and that is not pushing them hard. But in tough times get what you can, but i wouldn't buy a large amount
especially if they are once fired federal's. ymmv.

I'm working on a 190 SMK load for mine. 100 to 200 is all sub 1 inch. 300 it breaks the 1 inch mark. Playing with powder and brass prep. I'll post when I get it better controlled.

Try both the 208 AMAX as well as the Berger 210 LRBT which are very good bullets for the 300 WM. I have shot both out to a mile with my TAC 300. When I couldn't get my hands on H1000 I used 7828 SSC which provided very low SD's only drawback was the temperature sensitivity. As far as brass goes my preference is Norma. Anneal after every firing and use the IT collet die to size the area around the belt. The key to extending the life of the brass is proper die setup and annealing. Lots of good threads on the best way to size belted cases. Good luck.

The 208 Bthp shoots just as good as the amax and you can find those. Check powder valley. just don't tell anyone or you wont be able to find those either!
