I was wondering if anyone could give me some cartridge over all lengths for the 300 WSM with heavy bullets (208+) set up for a long action. Looking around I was only able to find short action related numbers. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Re: 300 wsm coal's?

Rather than guessing:

300 WSM case length = 2.10"

Hornady 208 Grain A-max OAL = 1.532"
"" Bearing surface = 0.555"
"" Nose length = 0.777"

If you keep at least one caliber of bearing surface in the case:
0.555
0.777
Less: 0.300 equals 1.04" of bullet outside the case.

2.100" + 1.04" = 3.14" MAX COAL

Oddly enough, the Seekins SA WSM DBM is set up for a max COAL of 3.14"....

If you have some other bullet in mind like the 220 or 240 SMK, let me know and I can give you numbers for those as well.

Goodness guys, a major reason for hand loading is to custom fit/match our ammo to our rig; a book OAL is no more helpful for that than a book powder charge! Find the OAL that functions and gives best accuracy for YOUR rifle, not someone else's.

Some case necks are less than bullet diameter. The idea of seating a "caliber deep" started in black powder days in order to keep bullets ftom working out when carried in pockets and it has no other meaning today.

Berger 185 gr VLD OAL 1.378"
Nose: 0.707"
Bearing surface 0.471"

Hornady 178 A-Max OAL 1.318"
Nose: 0.659"
Bearing surface: 0.509"

Once you figure how deep you want to seat them, <span style="color: #FF0000">"IF"</span> you want to seat shallower than one caliber, then the numbers will give you enough to compute your <span style="color: #FF0000">"POTENTIAL MAX COAL"</span>.

Highlighted so Fuzzball does not have a coronary.......

Never mind me, I just passed out.

But would you recompute all that for one caliber deep in a .300 Savage?

Why would I want to do that?? 300 Savage, really, with 208 gr A-Max's I presume. Hard to seat a bullet one caliber deep in a short necked sucker. But since the 300 savage was designed for 150 gr bullets. there's not really much hanging out of the case is there, with a designed OAL of only 2.60".

Noticing that you still not answering the question.

I guess you really don't have a clue as to what the minimum amount of bearing surface inside of a 30 cal neck, you would feel comfortable with........
