I'm going to build a new rifle I will shoot from the bench at 600 - 1000 yards and will also use for hunting. I've decided on either a 300wsm or a .284 . Which do you guys think is better when you look at barrel life, recoil and long range capability?
I would appreciate any help.

I like the BC's on .284 bullets. If you are going to build one though, build it on a long action to seat the bullets long and free up some powder space.

I have to agree with this one, the 7WSM is pretty close to the best of both worlds. I am having one built as we speak (actually 7mm-300WSM just to make things harder than they need to be!)

More knock down power/recoil with the 300WSM/210's-208's,2800-2850 fps same barrel life as 284win.Holds the 10 shot 1000 yard benchrest light gun world record.Happened right before my very eyes!

Slightly better BC with 284/180's,2800-2850 fps with a barrel less than 28".Better brass with the 284...Lapua.Holds the F-class 1000 yard record.

Both approx 2000 rounds barrel life for match accuracy.

Tough choice!

The 7mm bullets will give you better BC and less weight, so you can push them faster. The 284 is a great tactical round. For a bench gun, I'd lean to a faster round, maybe 7WSM or 7 Rem Mag. For 600-1K, you need a heavy 308 bullet, like the 208 A-max or 210 VLD. So, the 300WSM would not be myu first choice. A 300WM is a good option, or a 300 RUM. Fit the rifle with a heavy barrel and you'd be set.
