Range Report 300WM Hunting Bullet

I'm in need of a grizzly load for my upcoming AK trip.
Any ideas of a good bullet to start with for moose/bear?
I would love to be able to use existing dope in ballistic programs if possible.

I recommend 200 gr Nosler Accubond or Partition.

I have those on my list to load up.
Looking for a 3rd option to see which one my gun shoots the best.
It's going to be a long process to develop all 3 bullets, but it's all fun correct?

What about the 200 TSX's?

I hear good things about the 208 A-Max bullet by Hornady.

As for DOPE, use JBM online computer and make your own drop chart. Worked great for my 300WM and 180 Hornady SST. Just plug in your info, hit calculate. Easy as pie.

I would not use the Amax on Grizzly. My go-to would be the 200 Accubond or TSX type bullets.

A-Max is a bad deal for Griz. Swift AFrame, Nosler Partition/Accubond. Personally not a big Barnes fan but some of their offerings would certainly get the job done as well.

+1 TSX. I have not used the 200 grain, but used them in my 7mm 160 grain for lots of things - including big black bears. I am loading 300 grain tsx in .375 and am planning on using them on my next alaska trip.

+2 TSX or TTSX I would rather have too much bullet than not enough. Virtually guaranteed penetration from most any angle, Most rifles I've been around tend to really like the Barnes (it's all I use). Good place to start is ~.050 off the lands, for some reason Barnes like to jump; good rule of thumb (I learned the hard way) try not to mix Barnes with conventional bullets in the same shooting session w/o cleaning between brands. It has a tendency to foul badly & obviously won't help accuracy any!

The reason I don't care for them. The other is that when presented with a quartering away shot they ruin a lot of meat on the far side shoulder which on a moose is quite a bit. I'm pretty strictly a meat hunter. On a griz which is basically a trophy deal, the Barnes should work well. You won't have any issues with inadequate penetration with them that's for sure.

I have been on two moose hunts where moose were shot with a 30 cal 200gr. Accubond bullets from a 300 RUM. In 2008 my hunting partner shot a Shiras moose in Idaho either two or three times with the 200 gr Accubond. Penetration was terrible. Granted, the bullets were being pushed pretty fast from the 300 RUM and the range was close, but the Accubonds basically disintegrated. In 2009, I went on a Maine moose hunt with the same hunting partner. We called a Canada moose in to about 60 yds. The shot was quartering towards us in the front shoulder. Same 200 gr Accubond. Same rifle. Same result. The bullet didn't even make it to the rib cage. It disintegrated in the front shoulder. Based on these two experiences, I do not believe Accubonds are tough enough for moose and certainly not sufficient for a grizzly. I fully agree with the recommendations for the Partitions and TSXs.

What velocities were you getting with them? I've taken quite a few moose and bears with Accubonds (180gr and 160gr) in 300WM and 7RM without any issues. Sounds like they performed like a Ballistic tip instead of an Accubond. Interesting.

Here is my load I worked up for Bear:
Hornady Interlock 220g round nose (#3090)
0.0165inch off the lands (Maxed out in the mag)
78grains H1000
CCI LR Mag #250 primer
crimped
grouped 0.75inch 4 round group at 100 yards, 72F, 800 ft above sea level
velocity was not measured, but I figure it was between 2700-2800fps

As far as preformance goes, I intentially shot a deer front on at 30 yards to check the performance of the bullet. She was facing me and angled, so I aimed at the far side rear leg and shot her through the left front shoulder to maximize both bullet travel and damage to vital organs.
The bullet broke the shoulder, lung, heart, went throught the guts, put a hole in the pelvis, and lodged under the skin after traveling through the hams.
The bullet had mushroomed, and penetrated very well.
I would use this load with a bear without question or doubt.....

Didn't Nolser create the partition bullet because of a half-hearted penetration issue on a moose or some other big critter in about 1948 (or sometime during that decade)?

Anyone used the 210 VLD's?
They are a little slower, but I'm trying to get a good selection to see what my rifle likes best. I've got SW Ammo loading me up some Accubonds and just looking for 2 more loads to try before I head to the range.

What is the verdict on HSM's hunting ammo? Is it pretty good stuff?

I suggest the 180 TSX over Reloader 22, Winchester case, Fed 215M. I get over 3,000 fps through my M70 with great accuracy. NO experience with bears, but knocks the crap out of deer!

The more I read the better I like the TSX. I'm thinking about trying the TTSX's in 200gr. I've heard they aren't the most accurate bullet and they have some 'quirks' when loading them. Might be a good bullet to try. I've heard good and bad about the Accubonds.

If your rifle will stabilize it, shooting dangerous game, why not shoot the heaviest, best constructed bullet your rifle will accurately shoot? You'd better drive a freight train up that Grizzly's ass if you can. If the rifle isn't braked, brake it so you can shoot it much without getting all jumpy like.

I loaded these for a hunter going to Canada for bear; 100 Sierra 220's for practice, and 50 Noslers for practice and hunting.

Resist the temptation to get weak at the knees about those cute, colorful, sharp pointed expensive bullets. Your guide won't let you shoot at a bear far enough away for those bullets to take affect which is about 500 yards and more.

Not to spook you, and not to disparage an ammo maker, but be sure the chipper chap loading your ammo cares about whether you are eaten by a big fat grizzly bear on a nice sunny afternoon in the Yukon. If he doesn't, give Chad at Custom Reloads of Dallas a call. I know he cares.

The Accubond isn't getting a reputation as the Accubomb without reason. Failure is extremely common. The Partition is a semi premium bullet and does well at moderate velocities. I like the Norma Oryx from a 9.3. Recovered Swift A-Frames in .375 are also to my liking. I would definitely use a bonded bullet, heavy for caliber.

Sierra 200 gr SPBT. I would use a soft point bullet to insure mushrooming.

180gr or 220 gr TTSX all the way. They have great external ballistics and mushroom reliably while still retaining all their weight. They absolutely plow through innards. I just took 2 nice boars with 180 ttsx's fired from my win mag at about 3000 fps. Both didn't take a second step after shoulder shots. Through and through shots and absolutely destroyed everything in its path and left a fist sized exit on one.

The soft points are ok, I've seen and heard of them having separation issues when shot at tough skinned aminals. The accubonds are supposed to be ok...

I shoot the 200 gr TSX avg 3000 fps and have had great luck with one shot kills on both deer and elk. In a bone stock Browning A-bolt getting 1.5 inch groups at a 100 with just a front rest is acceptable to me as my farthest shot yet was 2 season ago 5x5 bull at LRF 225 yards then last year a cow at 330 yards. The only Deer I shot with this bullet right under 100 yds dropped like sack potatoes. I also a meat hunter, and the TSX tore up that deer pretty good, but didnt hit any meat, just lungs and heart. I am a fan of dead on the spot tho...tracking is over rated.

I think that the 210 Berger would be an excellent choice. I also shoot the208 amax but think that the Berger would be a better choice just because it devastates what it hits. The amax is a very accurate load but from my experience it will hit then continue to push straight on through not leaving much channel wound. Whereas a berger hits and it's usually lights out. What it's designed to do. To be honest Berger is all I pretty much load. Just my thoughts if it helps.

This, strongly leaning toward the Partition inside of 200 yards.


Also, the 191 Predator Hollow Point Solid from Dynamic Research LLC is a great choice too. Flies like a match bullet, with the terminal performance of a premium hunting bullet.

The Barnes Tipped LRX bullets shot like complete shit out of my custom 300winmag. I tried different powders, charges, seating depths etc...and could not get them to shoot as tight as I wanted. I switched to the Berger 210 VLDs and could not be happier. Consistent first shot hits out to 1200yds using my DOPE and JBM. And thats shooting in 8-10mph crosswind.

I guess you can argue that the Barnes retain more mass after expanding...but everything I have shot with a Berger VLD has been DRT.

200gr Nosler Accubond in my 300WM has taken each of my elk the past 5 years in one shot and it shot thru and didn't "accubomb" as one called it. I have used them in 25-06 for antelope at 420 yards, same caliber for muledeer, 338LM for elk and the 300WM for elk. It does what I want it to do. One shot kills. Last elk was thru the brisket and out the last rib on the opposite side. The exit hole in the hide is massive. Thats not length wise on an elk but still about 4 ft of meat to punch through.

I load the 200gr pretty hot over a lot of RL25. I will check out a promising load with Ramshot Magnum this summer too.

Don't leave out the Nosler E-tip, unfortunately us left coasters (california residents) have so called "green" hunting zones and are not allowed to shoot anything containing lead in specified areas.
My 300wm will shoot sub MOA with either the E-tip or TSX
