300wm, why all the hate?

I’d buy up a bunch if Lapua sold 300 Win Mag brass... hint hint

Or 300 PRC brass... hint hint

Some of the top PRS shooters in Sweden did a visit at the Lapua factory this past winter. Word has it that they were well on the way to setting up a production line for 300 win mag and 7mm rem mag brass. Which I think is something we would very much appreciate. I will buy a few hundred as soon as they come out.

.300WM is the .308 of the magnum world. In reality, it works very well, and has for decades. But because it’s old and a “Jack of all trades,” it’s looked down on by some.

My next build (whenever that is), will probably be a long action mag, and the .300WM and 7mm RM are two of the top competitors. Then again, I’m a strong .308 supporter. :)

I've shot my buddy's 300WM a few times out to almost a mile. Wanted a Magnum of my own.

I just put my first rounds out of my Tikka T3x 7mm Rem Mag last night. I instantly fell in love. Can't wait to re-barrel and get a solid brake on her!! Can't wait to get my load development finished and see what I can do to 1000+

So I’m starting a new build with it likely being chambered in 300wm but it seems like there are a lot of people that turn there noses to the cartridge. The most common complaint I see is that it’s a belted magnum. Why would it being a belted magnum be a disadvantage over other similar cartridges? Also is there any non belted magnums around with similar performance? I know the 300 PRC is out and it looks promising but getting quality brass and dies seems to be an issue.

What’s your opinion should I go with 300wm or should I consider anything else?
Go with an learn to properly use what you want, otherwise you'll be chasing internet B/S all your life.

DING DING DING WE HAVE A WINNER!!

That's why damn near all my shooting-related threads I start begin essentially with something like "I'm doing this, I'll let y'all know how it goes."

Threads in the Pit where @Lowlight dubs us "assholes" are ...well.. That's different.....n' shit. ??

Btw ,lapua used to have the 7mm RM line before.

I found a deal on a bag of 300 win mag Lapua brass a few months ago. They are at least 15 years old according to the seller, they are brand new and he just had them in his gun vault for all that time. I have found a few sources that state that it was Norma who made the win mag brass for Lapua. But the cases weigh about 15 grains more than Norma (light) brass. I dont know, maybe Norma did make them, but it seems odd that they are in a different weight than their regular production?

I sort of heard the same thing. You got lucky on that find!

The only downside is working up a load on that brass, then running out of it some day. My thought on that is to always have enough of a particular brass to develop off of that I could wear out a barrel with. I.E.: 150 pieces with X number of reloads each roughly equals a barrel.

Yeah, I pretty much reason the same way. But since my win mag is currently being rebuilt to pretty much reseble a Mk13mod5 I am back to start from scratch with a new barrel anyway. I figured that I will work up a load with the Lapua brass and Hornady ELD-X bullets and run those as far as they will go. I also have a good stash of Norma brass, probably enough to wear another barrel or two out.

This^^^ brass life is usually not as good as a normal case in my experience loading for 300wm. I think the best I ever got was a batch that went 7 reloads before the web started to separate. Meanwhile I got 308,6.5,338lm cases with 15+ reloads on them np.

I have been shooting 300wm federal brass for 3 years now. My current brass have 26 firings and are FL sized and annealed every time. If you anneal....the brass will last longer than the barrel

I anneal every firing. Who knows maybe my chamber was on the long side. I have moved on to 300 Norma and am not looking back.

The wind was from the left at 10 mph, here is my results from today.

I am not pushing them, hoping to get longer life out of my brass.
my other load today which I did not record was with retumbo and my speeds where 210’s going 3050 fps.
