I just bought a 308 rifle and along with the rifle I received several boxes of factory ammunition. Different manufactures, PMC, UMC, Federal etc. I noticed on the boxes that some are marked 308 C and some are 308 E or F can't really tell. What do these letter's mean????
also I have been looking are Ballistic charts and it appears that the 165gr has more energy than the 180gr at longer ranges. which would be better for Elk? I have always use my 300wm for Elk but I want to take the 308 this year for a backup gun. need to use the correct weight bullet.

thanks

Pictures would be helpful. You post basically asks "I have different brands of ammo with different markings - what do they mean?" There are hundreds of combos of factory 308 ammo out there and you do not provide enough information for any feedback.

here are some of the different codes ammo 002.JPG

could not get the other pictures to upload. the other pictures indicate 308 E and 308 BX . these codes may not mean anything, but I haven't seen codes on my other ammo.

Any information of which bullet weight and type would be best for Elk would also be appreciated

thanks

That is fairly old PMC stuff. I used to shoot it until I built up my supply of brass. The 308C is just PMC's product code.
Typically a bullet that starts out with more energy retains that advantage at a distance. I suppose at the point the 180's start bleeding off velocity the 165's might me a tad better until they start bleeding off. If I was using my 308 for elk I would probably opt for the heavier bullet probably something in the 178gr range. Too light of bullet may not work well on a large animal at distance, too heavy you're not going to get it there with suitable velocity.

my $.02 you can mail me a check
