308 ar options and opinions

so im pretty sure my next project will be a 308 dpms pattern ar. it will be a long range plinker that i can set out a torso target at longish range and a hit is a bullseye. i shot like this about a month ago and it was great not analizing why my bullet hit 2 inches from bull @ 600yds. just go out and bang steel.

the rifle will probably wear a acog.

basically im seeing 3 options

1. buy a gun like i want

2 build from scratch

3 buy a cheap gun and upgrade barrel, trigger, stock. im thinking i can get the rifle cheaper doing it this way. this gun

is 850. i think with the price of lowers, uppers, BOLT CARRIER GROUPS and everything else for the 308 this may be the cheapest option. i was floored by some of the parts prices. this gun does not have to be sub moa.

give me some thoughts

obviously i missed the cabelas mixup. what is the cheapest a complete 308 ar can be built. i mean bottom of the barrel parts. im not planning on doing one like that im just trying to firgure if 856 is a good price for that group of parts

For your intended goal, I'd say go with a new or used DPMS and just swap the trigger. Most of the OEM barrels out there will more than accomplish torso sized steel banging at 600yds. Just make sure whatever you get already has a free float tube and you'll be set.

thanks folks. the only thing im thinking is id like to sell the factory barrel and but a 20". the only reason being is thats what the acog is set for. i could probably heat my loads a little to make up for the 16 i guess.

what do you guys think about the price of this rifle vs the parts to build one. so far (im early in the research fase) it seams i cant buy the parts as cheap as the rifle

I'm in the middle of compiling parts for two different builds, and no, you won't be able to part it together cheaper than $850. It's hard enough to find a BCG for under $250 as it is.

I wouldn't recommend a new DPMS at this point in time, considering the lack of quality control.

True there, and why I also recommended a used one given his budget.

The thing I don't like about the new DPMS is how they changed the rail heights of their uppers last year and they no longer sync up with the DD rails. This is why mine are being built off of JD receivers.

ive looked at used ones but they are usually either so accessoried that they are to expensive, or asking more than new price. i dont care to spend what ever i need to to get it right the first time, but my thinking is im only asking for a 2 moa rifle. if i want to do precesion work ill use a diffrent gun (stiller 260).

i thought about going the 260 route since i have 2 but i want to be able to load up 1000 or so rounds for this rifle at a time and dont want to pay 260 brass prices

you can get a good matched set 308 upper/lower for $600 or less. barrel for $200-$300-$500 if you want. BCG for $215. the rest is on you. you can search for a good used one thats proven and a decent shooter. thats the best bargain id say.

I was in your shoes a month ago except that I was looking for a more precision kind of rig. A Rock River Arms LAR 8 fell in my lap completly by accident and I couldnt be happier. You might look at those. Although they dont fit the DPMS pattern. My 2cents.

Theres plenty of good deals out there for parts to build your AR .308. Set out for a budget and try to stay within that budget is the way I went so it helped narrow things down for buying purposes and I came out with a sub moa shooter.

Other thing is see what is working well. The hide has TONS of good info and is my source for anything rifle.

IMO I would go with a built up gun if you dont want to worry about the building process or if that isnt a problem then by all means go for it. I built my own and like it as it has everything I want in it.

Heck for the bottom of the chum barrel you can get a gun for next to nothing if you wait for parts to come around on the cheap side. I would say somewhere around the 700 range is about the lowest I have seen. Usually though its at least 1k and closer to 1,200.00

I have a rra lar-8, its bone stock except for the muzzle break that i had put on it to protect the threads for my future can LOL. But you can look at my posts. There's a half inch 5 shot group @125yds that i got out of it with some hand loaded ammo. If i remember correctly it was 168 grn hornady a-max w 43.5grns of 4064. yeah its a little expensive on the front end but once you got it your shooting, you can put the extra junk and doo dads on later

Try AR-15.com <span style="text-decoration: underline">Equipment Exchange </span>for lots ofparts, uppers and complete rifles. Unfortunately too many shooters are having to sell their 'safe queens' to save their houses. Great deals out there.
