308 AR recommendations

I'm looking for a used 308 AR. Budget isn't too important as long as its high quality AND holds its value in the used market (so no custom builds...). If I had to, I would say in the 2k-4k range. I know I can get new ones in that price range but I like to let the first owner take the hit for driving it off the lot new (sort of speak).

I'm looking for great accuracy, reliability and brand recognition (for resale value)

I don't know much about 308 AR's, but from my little knowledge I'm thinking Gap 10 is my main choice?

With the wait times for GAP and other top tier guns. The used ones sell for about the same price as a new one. Because People will pay a premium to not wait. So if resale is similar accross the board, and you don't have budget constraints. It sounds like you need to decide what features you want and go from there. What's your intended use? And you definitely can't go wrong with a GAP 10. If I had the extra money and didn't care about weight, that's what I would've purchased.

Honestly, I don't have any specific intended use. Just mostly some range fun and to have something for my wife to use if we start going to matches again (Other than my one 308 rifle, I only have a 338 or 223, neither suitable match calibers).

I rarely ever use a semi (I have a DD 223), so I don't know even know what features I need. I suppose I would be looking for a shorter barrel, maybe 18-20", since I have a 24" barrel on my bolt action.

I've used a 308 bolt action for ever now. However I figure if I can get a semi and it's just as accurate, I might like it more and start using that instead.

I don't own either. But if I was going to get one, I'd go with a JP. More my style. Both are hammers.

Why not build your own or have one built by a good smith? If have a NIB 308 upper and lower, matching serial numbers from Sun Devil Manufacturing if you're interested. They are stronger than Mil-Spec and are milled billet, not forged. Use a Krieger or Lilja or Black Hole Weaponry barrel, etc. I got one in 6.5 creedmoor. Just got a Vortex PST installed with a Vortex Cantilever mount. Sun Devil is putting out a new 15.5 inch handguard for 308's later this year that will go over a micro gas port. Their 5.56 is already on the market and it is really bad ass.

Check out the Sun Devils as well as the JP site. You can't go wrong with either a GAP or JP. That's my two cents worth.

I like gap, kac, Lmt and LWRC (I don't have a pof or jp.), but for resale and GP, either a ECC or EMC used May be something to consider. Even used, they aren't cheap.

I have had my GAP 10 for a few months now. It has fulfilled all expectations and then some. I also love the looks of the HK MR762. I have seen some showing up in shops. They are beautiful.

The LWRC REPR is a good choice, but the best i've used commercially and officially is the Knights SR 25 series in general. Through all the minutia of AR10 platforms, the problem we see consistently is feeding issues because of the chambers and/or bolt/gas issues, which at our shop is a never ending battle it seems. Hence the LWRC and SR25's have never come back for that reason.

No body mentioned the New DPMS Gen 2 in 308, great weight savings and not the same Old DPMS, plus a great difference in price and wait time. Much better for a female shooter, weight wise. I have had Armalite customs, and JP. If I was going to spend the money and the weight time was of no issue, I would get the Larue or the JP.

Gap-10s arent going to take much of a hit as stated above.

A custom Mega MaTen could be built for $2500 easily, and include a geissele hs match trigger, custom bartlein / satern / krieger /etc barrel, adjustable gas block, whatever stock you wanted, any muzzle brake you wanted, probably even cerakoting as well. Just something to think about.

I've owned a POF and currently own an LMT MWS. Both are great, but like I said, I still own the LMT! Mine is a 16" SS barrel and is freakishly accurate. My 105lb office manager was making regular hits on a 10" steel target at 345y with no previous shooting experience whatsoever. I just ran her through some of the gas gun basics I know to do (and I know little compared to many here) and she was making hits 8 out of 10 times. Can't go wrong with GAP either - I own a few of their bolt guns so it stands to reason their semi-autos shoot very well too. Good luck.

I have a JP LRP-07H and it is an excellent rifle. The 07H is a package which had everything I wanted in a 308 AR.
In 2010 it was ~$3100 out the door. They still offer this package which comes with an 18 inch barrel, sling and one piece scope mount and other accessories.

Alright guys, after a bit of research it looks like JP might be my best bet. Looks like a top of the line SEMI, built from the ground up. Is there any difference between the psc-12 and lrp-07 other than the dual charging system. I guess a better question would be, is there any disadvantage of getting the psc over the lrp. It seems like all everyone talks about is the LRP.

I'll keep an eye out for a gap-10 as well, as it doesn't look like I can go wrong with that either.

Alright sweet, that's what I thought. The only reason I asked is because I only see the lrp mentioned in threads, never the psc

I would go in this order:

1. JP
2. GAP
3. Larue OBR/tOBR

I've owned several AR-10 type rifles and finally I'm totally happy with the JP. All the others I've owned (Remington R-25, Noveske N6, GAP-10, LWRC Repr) have been excessively heavy and bulky. I use my stuff mostly for hunting pigs and coyotes and such and typically do a lot of moving. The JP handles more like an AR15 rather than an AR10. Mine is an LRP-07H with a few upgrades (heatsink, UBR stock, silent capture buffer) and I have a Bushnell ET 3-12 on there it weighs just over 10 lbs. The heavest I had previously was the GAP (22" barrel) and it weighed in the neighborhood of 16 lbs with glass and ammo. I've shot several OBRs and they are accurate but same as the others, too heavy. For my purposes, the JP just can't be beat and is the only one I still own (wife would shoot me with one of them if I had kept them all). Here's mine:

First 4 shots into just over 0.5 moa and pulled the last shot, buck fever? The top group I got my act together and the 5 shots went into just over 0.5 moa. Only have 25 rounds thru the MR762 at this point

+1 on the MR762. I have 5 SA 7.62mm rifles. It is my newest and my favorite. It consistently eats any ammo I have fed it w/o problem. It is accurate. Only thing I would improve is the stock trigger. It is very good but not as good as the aftermarkets in terms of pull weight and low creep. I am waiting for my Geissele to show up.

But I just bought a Bushnell Elite 3.5-21X50 FP G2DMR scope and a ADM Recon mount from Scott @ Liberty Optics (great guy) for it so the Geissele will have to wait. Took it out today to zero in the new scope and the final group after zeroing was just over 0.6 moa. I love this weapon.

I know someone that did it and his opinion was it was night and day.

The jp looks great and gets great reviews, but if you don't want to wait half a year and pay $4.5k. You should pick up a pof. I found mine for just under $2k nib including shipping and ffl fees. It's 8.75lbs for the 16.5". With their new rail setup I was able to mount my swfa 5-20 hd in .965" tall 30mm rings. I have a perfect cheek weld so I don't need to add the weight and expense of a prs.

With the newer rail, scope, rings rifle, etc. I'm at $3.5k

I new that the HK specific Geissele trigger was $450 that is why I said I'd have to wait :>( after purchasing the scope and mount I mentioned. But forgot it was a different trigger than the SSA-E that I just installed in my Armalite AR 10A4. Thanks for the reminder.

Also, are there wait time of a couple months on JP's barrel kits as well, or are those ready to ship?

Each of these are very accurate, I cannot distinguish which is more accurate than the other, my results on any particular outing depends on lots of extraneous factors other than the rifle (weather that day, my state of mind, etc.) Just keep your eyes open for any of these four for sale, you won't be disappointed in any of them!

Well the reason I ask is sometimes there are lrp's for sale that aren't 308, so I wanted to know how easy it would be to. Just buy and re barrel. I wouldn't want to mess with the fitment though if it's not plug and play. Like you said, I wouldn't want to risk ruining the reliability or accuracy.

I have had excellent results with the LWRC REPR, the Larue OBR as well as the POF. I was initially happy with the SIG 716 until the ejector system locked up. That, combined with SIG's (lack of) 'customer service,' means I cannot recommend it to anyone for anything other than as a toy...
