Bought my first Armalite 308 in '08.
Didn't like it, so it sat in the case, neglected for many years.
Didn't like the carry handle, didn't like the Kenner SSP style charge handle, and didn't group worth a damn.

Then china bug happened, and the plant I worked at shut down for nearly 2 months, and I figured what the hell, I'll make it into something I did like.
Had been trying for years to buy a flat top upper from Armalite, and they never had any in stock.
So disassembled it, and went after the carry handle first. After machining it off, made a custom rail that saddled down over the upper so it was at the same height as the front tube.

Next was to rid it of the SSP charge handle, and picked up an FAL handle, and some steel stock, and made it into a non-reciprocating set-up.

When it was all the way down to pieces, found one of the accuracy issues, the pinned & welded brake was hiding one of the worst damn muzzle crowns I had ever seen in 50 years playing with firearms!
It looked like it was done with a hand drill, using a dull countersink bit, scored, and off center.
Pretty sure this thing was slapped together at Armalite, and they figured that once the brake was on, no one would ever see that horrible workmanship.

Same went for the front of the upper, wasn't square with the bore by at least .005". No wonder I had to have thee rear sight cranked almost all the way off to one side.
Anyway, re-crowned the barrel, trued the front of the receiver, and bedded the barrel.

Now it shoots pretty damn well :).

And as you can see, I like my front sights at the front of the barrel. All my ARs are built this way.
Glad that I didn't trade the old girl in 20 years ago.

That's not my style but very cool nonetheless. Nice to see some out of the box thinking.

Yeah, not what I really wanted for a big bore either, but since the original purchase, found an Armalite 22" upper, that was kept as a option.
Later decided that having one buffer/spring & trigger tuned to a 16" barrel with 150 grain ammo, and thinking I could just swap out the upper that used a heavier projectile was not going to work out very well, so found another lower to build a dedicated long range 308.
Gathering parts now, and will be doing another FAL charge handle conversion on it.
Thankfully, it's already a flat top.

I'll play. Just got my upper back from d.wilson. They did a great job on my KAC URX install. This is a 1moa shooter all day long, maybe better for someone more seasoned at shooting gas guns than me.

Edit: don't hate on my 10x SWFA. After 1.5 years I have not decided what optic I want for this rig and the 10x I've had lying around as a "test scope"

There's relatively little standardization in big block gun components compared to that we enjoy in small block guns. Sometimes you end up with a combination that works. Sometimes you do not.

I've used KAC big block rails with SR-25/DPMS pattern receivers.

IMG_3193.jpg

Some KAC stuff doesn't even work with other KAC stuff. I've had to hone out KAC URX barrel nuts - just to get them to fit over first generation KAC SR-25 barrels.

I love the look of the URX 3.1's, best looking rail IMO.

Great looking rifle!

Did you have to do anything to put the mb762 on there? Or it just slid over? How was the weight and what length is the urx? Fantastic looking build.

no it just slid right over. the URX 3.1 is the standard SR one with the gooseneck, probably weighs around 16lbs with all the stuff on it. Thank you for the compliment, I have to find another can of aervoe field drab so I can paint all the unpainted parts to match the rest of the rifle.

@mj23polaris
nice builds. nice range, also.
IMHO, large-frame AR-10 6.5CM's are allowed in this thread. I don't think you're the first 6.5CM in this thread, either.

^^^ Nice Setup. Makes me want to have mine finished

Gathering All the Parts Now for Mine
Think I Will Go with:

Mega MaTen Monolithic 12" MLOK Upper and Rail
MARS-H Lower
Ranier 16" Intermediate Gas Cut Down to 13"
TBAC DOMINUS

Will be my night hunting setup
Say @thestoicmarcusaurelius did you ever get around to putting this setup together sir? Pics?

Seekins SP10 (Gen 2) 6.5 CM
Factory 22" Rock Creek Barrel
Geissele SSA-E
Aero Ambi Charging Handle
S&B PMII 5-25 T3

Freshly kryloned in a 3 color Rust-Oleum.

Loves 42gr of H4350, Hornady Brass, Federal Large Rifle Primers (non match), and 140ELDM bullets. Velocity in NH is about 2720fps with the load. Shoots 3/4MOA groups from prone. I don't think I have seen it over 1MOA in the 500 rounds through it.

Its a SIG can, no?

Yup! The 762Ti QD I think.
Is the PVS14 a helmet mounted or rifle mounted setup? Pretty sure you can actually do both with those right? Plans to mount it on the rifle and smoke some hogs at night?? Always wanted to do a nighttime hog hunt man, that shits legit. Some guys we lease out land to have NV kit they run while setting up over bait.

You can mount a 14 to a 5.56 (nothing more for recoil), but would highly recommend against it.

1.) To scan you are going to be aiming your rifle at everything.
2.) You can’t put them behind magnified optics.
3.) A red dot or similar may “burn” a permanent black spot into the tube even on a NV setting after extended use.

I would helmet mount it and find a laser to mount. Even better, helmet mount a 14 of goggles (much easier to move around with), then put a thermal on the rifle. Even with super high quality tubes, sh*t blends together really quickly outside of 100 hundred yards (animals have great natural camo). They can’t hide from thermal.

I had no idea you would burn in a black spot on mounted pvs14. Makes sense though.

To be safe you would only want to turn on the dot (again even on NV settings) when you are about to engage targets. Or do the same with the 14. If you out there scanning with it on a rifle (not ideal) for extended periods of time, you will likely regret the blem in the tube.

Picked up my first AR10 today - a pre-merger MEGA Maten receiver kit. Came with an RPS trigger as well - prior 308 experience was with a PTR91 and then a SCAR17.
Honestly torn if I want to go mroe long range ( not many around me to make use of ) or more battle rifle type. A P&W 13.7 sounds like a bundle of concussive fun :)

Now to find a DPMS High handguard

Now to find a DPMS High handguard
maybe you can get another slant-cut upper? then build both!
