I have been looking over the load data for .308 as it relates to barrell length. Is there a feeling about minimum length or at what point longer barrell is not helping?
The short answer you can read more about when you run your search is that any caliber's optimum barrel length (or minimum required barrel length for that matter) will vary widely depending on what the end user's wants/needs are for the rifle, including targets (paper, game, etc.), max range, ammo you plan on running, barrel twist, etc., etc., etc.

Yea, go with the shortest possible length for whatever velocity you need to hit whatever your target might be.
