Hey y'all I have been trying to figure out what semi-auto 308 to get.

It will be used for steel out to 900 or so and coyote, mostly bipod shooting.

I would like to run a suppressor on it eventually.

I like the FNAR for its light-weight and by most reports it is accurate right out of the box, for a great price. I dont like the mags.

On the other I am interested in building a Ma-ten myself. I have not built an Ar style rifle from parts before, but am fairly handy so I think I could pull this off with help from the hide. It would be more expensive but would be a better platform most likely all the way around I think. Figured I would get the parts from Ranier...if I went this route my questions would be:

Is there an advantage to the monolithic setup Mega offers?

What barrel? Krieger? The ranier barrels? Accuracy is important to me.
A 20 inch barrel should keep me supersonic with 175smk out to 1000 right?

DPMS bolt? Is there a better option?

Is there a good guide for building one of these up?

Am I not asking an important question? Total noob to 308 AR stuff.

I'm thinking the Mega build would still be cheaper than the Gap10. If money were no object I'd just get of those....and may do that anyway based on what I learn here.

There is a thread halfway down the page about the MA-TEN, if you check it out there's a link to a guy's MA TEN monolithic build plus pics of a couple other peoples rifles etc.

Also here is a huge thread on ARFCOM about the MA-TEN.

this guy's build looks tits to me:

Neither. Our new XCR-M .308 is the best new .308 coming to the market next month. It it accurate, best ergonomics, quick change barrel system. Check it out.

Here's my thread that I did up on the Mega. There are quite a number of reviews here, just google Mega. I have the Mono and love it. The plus that you get with having a mono is that, in your case for bipod shooting, any torque or tension due to bipods or anything else is distributed throughout the entire length of upper and not just the barrel nut. This was just one of the reason I went mono. Check out mine and all the other Mega threads. YOu won't be disapointed.

Do you do anything here besides shamelessly advertise for free?

Re: 308 build questions, Ma-ten or FNAR

I am kinda interested in that xcr what other similarities does it have the the FAL? I mean other than the charging handle, bolt catch, the upper and lower receiver look quite similar to an FAL as well, just without the dust cover. Is the action the same (operating system) if so I might have to check one out as long as the price is right if its a 4k$ "new" FAL you can forget about it but if its around 1500-1800 I would consider it as a updated variant of the para FAL. and you might have a customer. Sorry if I just jacked your thread.

If your looking at an FNAR why not consider an M1A? not quite the aftermarket as an AR style but hella better than the FN. they can be MOA guns with some work and dont cost much more than the FN. But I think comparing an AR style to anything is comparing apples to a jet. Just b/c of the ability to swap out the uppers and go from a long range 260 to a close and light 308 in a mater of seconds. no other established boomstick can do that.

Re: 308 build questions, Ma-ten or FNAR

I've got an FNAR so I will clue you in on this gun.

Pro's, its a tack driver up to about 700 yards. Its well made and FN will take of any problems you have. The gun is basically a Browning BAR hunting rifle. I really wished they made one with a 26" barrel.

Its a piston/action bar gun so the bolt group/action doesn't get dirty very fast and can go a few thousand rounds before it needs a full disassembly and cleaning(not including the barrel and chamber).

The action has to be one of the smoothest I've ever felt.

Con's, the heavy barrel FNAR is exactly that, heavy. If you want I will drop a loaded mag in it and weigh it for you. Not sure where you got it was light weight.

Not many aftemarket parts

Not really easy to take apart and I would never consider doing it on a battle field.

The barrel is non free floating.

Mags are pricey but can be found for about $55ea and I have had two bad ones which FN replaced no questions asked. The mags are steel and you could probably run them over with a tank and not hurt them.

Conclusion. I like mine, its a weekly shooter and it see's about 3000 rounds a year. Its been more reliable then my new home brew AR 5.56 and is damn near as accurate as my bolt guns at long distances.

Would I buy another one? Sure, if its the new one with the McMillan stock and the free floated barrel and I could get a longer barrel.
