.308 build. What Muzzle Brake, Gas Block and Handguard?

My first build. Building a LR-308. Want to know what muzzle brake, gas block and handguard you would choose to put on your long distance/precision LR-308 build and why?

This gun will be sporting a Krieger match grade barrel.

Brake boils down to whether or not you will suppress it and if you are, go with a mount that utilizes that can. SLR offers a detent adjustable, clamp on gas block that can't be beat. Hand guard is all preference. Find the guard you like and go from there. SLR makes some nice hand guards that have a nice barrel nut design.

Hand guard and gas blocks are a person by person choice. Get ones that suit your needs and financial situation. But I will recommend the Surefire SOCOM muzzle brake. I really reduced the recoil impulse and muzzle rise on the LMT MWS and SIG 716 I put them on. So much so that I can stay on target after firing. One warning they can be a bear to time (index) properly.

+1 on SLR Rifleworks for gas block. MicroMOA makes a quality block as well. I'm not aware of a handguard SLR makes for the 308. Only have seen their AR15 pattern designs.

I like Precision Armament brakes. Of course, if you plan on purchasing a suppressor, those would be the obvious choice.

You'll need to find out whether your upper is a high or low profile design. Based on that, Midwest Industries and Fortis are my favorites across the board from a handguard perspective. I would suggest the longest handguard available if you plan on shooting prone a lot. That'll allow you to mount the bipod closer to the muzzle translating into multiple benefits from that particular position. GL!

Syrac makes an excellent gas block as well, get the Gen 2 version. JEC makes a very effective muzzle brake. Handguards are a dime a dozen, I'd suggest free floating smooth design with an ability to bolt on rails where you want them, these days you would be silly not to get a keymod handguard.

I choose it over the others because it was recommended to me by a friend/gunsmith and LR match shooter who had a lot of experience with various muzzle brakes and cans. What really sold me was a video I saw on the flash signature which was practically nil. Wether it's worth the price I can't say as other than the muzzle brakes on my 308 TRG and AIAW those are the only others I have on rifles. All I can say it reduced the recoil impulse far better than either the TRG or AIAW factory brakes which are much heavier rifles than either of the semi's I used the SOCOM on. But as I said previously they were a bear to index properly.

Either 6 or 7. A shorter barrel would likely need to be open more. Right in the range they say is about right in the instructions. Performs flawless after finding the "sweet spot"

I'm a big fan of the surefire socoms because they work very well and allow supression.

Recently a friend picked up the Lantac Dragon 7.62 and this unit is equally good recoil & muzzle rise mitigation. If supression isn't needed then this would be a good option. We were doing quad taps on 2/3 IPSC steel at 600 geting all 4 hits.

I know keymod and lightweight are the new rage but consider what the use will be before making any decisions. A bit of extra weight can be your friend depending on your objective. Based on my needs I currently have my setups running superior weason systems E series with 1 units sporting the SWS sniper rifle handguard.

Again let your egronomics situation dictate the stock. IE: height of rings required for objective clearance, height needed for clip-on use, this will dictate cheek height and need for stock pack, cheek adjustment or not. Then of course length of pull and weight for desired balance/packability etc.

Magpul PRS, UBR, LMT Socom and others come to mind. Either way if you stick to purpose the answer will fall into place.

The SLR is a great adj gas block with the addition of the detent and spring it makes dialing gas a lot easier when switching between from use with a can vs no can. As for brakes go I would look at Ross Schuler or Nathan Wright the one sells 3port and the other does the 4 and 5 port they are made extremely well and he will even tapper the brake to match your barrel profile. that being said you will need to take it to a gun smith to get it timed and opened up to your caliber if needed. Yet at $45 they will be very hard to beat.

When it comes to hand guards pick your flavor and go from there I am using a JP and Love it rail section where I need them.

Can't beat a SureFire muzzle brake IMHO. Turned my .308 Tikka T3 in the kick of my Piston AR-15!
