.308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

Brux
Bartlein
Broughton
Border
Krieger
Satern
Rock
Hart
Shilen

1:11 would be good, 1:10 won't hurt you any.

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

Get what your gunsmith recommends. Seems like some smiths are partial to some manufacturers then others. They all shoot well. I would say it's more gunsmith dependent then barrel.

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

As stated above any of the quality barrel makers will work very well, I have always shot Kreiger and never been let down. I am currently very inpressed w/ a Broughton. As stated above also I beleve the money is made in the fitting and chambering, try harder to find a good smith, there are manny talked about on this site that will do you good. Good luck.

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

Rock Creek/Mike Rock barrels, Bartlein, Obermyer, Lilja, Broughton 5C barrels are gaining popularity (the 5C from Broughton is similar to the 5R process from what I understand) and any listed here should be GTG. I agree that the smith that does the work is the biggest key to accuracy in a rifle. GAP, Roscoe (LA Precision), or Randy (R&D Precision) are all well known and well respected smiths whos work has shown their capabilities and talents.

I have used multiple 11.25 twist and a 12 twist with 155 Scenars and had fantastic results.

I don't think you want to go a slow as 1:13 or 1:14 twist for a 308 built in the event you ever want to shoot anything other than the 155gr loads. I have run 155gr Scenars in twists as fast as 1:10 to as slow as 1:12 without a single stabilization problem and with excellent accuracy. I have a Rock 5R 1:10 twist 20" barrel that absolutely loves the 155gr Scenars!!

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

I Love my Shilens. #5 1-10 in .308 w/168gr. VLD's=one hole 5 shot groups @ 100yds. I know they aren't that popular on here, but I've also got another very accurate #7 in 6.5-.284....all in what your smith prefers, though really.

Please remember that the 155 SCENAR is as long as a 175gr Match King. Length of the projectile counts when considering twist.

Scenars shoot fine through fast twist barrels.

IMHO 1:10 is pushing the upper end for a .308. 1:12 is at the bottom. I have shot 155-178 through a 1:12 with excellent results. Many have been running 208 Amax through 1:12 tubes.

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

I have a 1/14 twist for the 155 scenars and there is no issues shooting the Lapua in this twist. I did a lot of research before selecting this twist rate and surprisingly it is much more common then you would believe. IF you want to shoot other weights besides the 155 go with a quicker twist my other barrel is 1/11.25 and i have no issued shooting 155-180 with satisfactory results.

As for barrels i had great success with the first one so i chose the same barrel maker. Mine are Rocks but others have suggested quality barrels as well.

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

You have heard it before, fine barrels you have seen the names of mfg. but from the mechanical stand point its the chambers/installs the barrel that equal to or more important. Training and the ability to shoot will serve you the best of all.

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

Krieger (now offering obermeyer 5R profile)
Hart
Schneider
Broughton 5C

1/10 twist will handle everything from 150 to 200.

Stainless steel over chrome moly.

We are blessed with many great options!

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

I have a Schneider and a Bartlein.
If you get a Schneider barrel, you get to talk to him for at least a half hour free of charge. Full of knowledge and will give you answers to all your questions.

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

I think MOST custom bbls will out shoot the trigger puller anyhow just pick one that is in your budget and get to shootin.

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

hart 26 in 1-10 twist installed by bills gunsmithing in silex mo. is shooting dime size groups at 300 yds unbeiveable work had barrel installed and action trued . would have never thought a gun could shoot this well off a bi-pod . it eats 168 grn nosler norma brass and reloader 15 with 45 grns. i also had a brake installed by him. have pics of gun and targets posted

Re: .308 Custom Barrel Recomendation

For what it is worth, the "revolutions per minute" (RPM) of the projectile is a result of muzzle velocity and twist. Muzzle velocity is partially a result of barrel length. So a slower twist that might work with a given bullet in a 30 inch barrel might not work with the same twist in a 20 inch barrel.

So, ask your smith which barrel maker and then ask the barrel maker what twist for your desired bullets and barrel length. If you want some leeway for later, go with a faster twist.

FWIW, IMO, and YMMV.
