So I’ve been looking for a highly rated muzzle break for a 28nosler but it seems they are either 6.5 or .308 diameter. Excuse my ignorance but do I order the smaller diameter and have my smith ream it to the correct diameter or would a .308 be as affective?

Get the .264 and let the smith ream it. Muzzle brakes aren't always reamed true from the maker. I once sent a smith an already reamed brake for a 300 win mag barrel and the brake had .010" runout which meant it was going to have to be reamed true anyway and would be oversized. Oversized wouldn't hurt much but since the smith is going to have to install it anyway you're better off getting the undersize one and having it fit correctly in the first place.

Can not use 264 since you sooting 284 . I think reason is obvious .

Thank you all for the help. I figured it wouldn’t make much of a difference to go with a 308. I went ahead and ordered a Heathen .308 muzzle break last night. I look forward to using it.
