.308 quandary

[Flynn]

1. I want and will purchase a .308 soon.

2. I'm torn with the semi-auto options (OBR, POF, Noveske)

3. As the intended purpose of this weapon is long range precision (target shooting) and hunting (medium - large game). I live in South Western Idaho (high desert mixed terrain with a lot of opportunity for longs shots.

4. Given it's use, I'm struggling to determine what platform to get (I love semi-autos, but have no need for fast shooting with this application).

I'm considering the Sako TRG, but my preference is a semi-auto...I've not owned a Sako TRG or any other .308 for that matter (I always hunt with "old rough and ready" my rem 700 30.06).

Ideally, I would get both (semi-auto and a TRG or comparable bolt rifle).

As far as bolt guns to, is the TRG the cat's meow/benchmark?

AS far as semi-autos, (OBR, POF, Noveske)? any others I should consider? FYI, LWRC isn't an option, as I don't care for a complicated piston system (piston systems should be simple imo).

If long range precision is your goal, buy the TRG. The semi's simply can't match a bolt gun's accuracy and you would only be disappointed.

And you know this, how? Maybe you should do some more reading before making another post. With the right shooter, a semi can be as accurate as a bolt gun. The 2010 Oregon Sniper Challenge was won with a POF*USA semi-auto.

If you are looking for max accuracy and versatility, go bolt action.

If you are planning on shooting for distance, I would sure suggest looking into a 260 REM. They're A LOT less affected by the wind. I'm strongly considering rebarrelling my 308 5R to 260, having shot it against several 260 and 6.5x47 wielding competitors at 600+ yards. Damn 6.5s just slip through the wind.

Unless you already have a few 308 semi's like M1A, FAL, etc and you want ammo commonality, 260 will kick the snot out of a 308 in every category except factory ammo availability.

Yep, a shooting game that values speed, as well as accuracy. The OP said he wasn't concerned with speed. A heavy barrelled bolt gun will outshoot (accuracy wise) a semi auto in the same price range every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

how far do you consider long range? whats the max range that you would like to take it?

Semis with a decent barrel are getting pretty close to bolt gun,

all of the 308s out there are decent rifles and no one paticular rifle outshines the other as long as they are configured the same.

i had an armalite and it was great, sold it and now have a noveske barreled MA-TEN. very impressed with it.

Folks at SHOT are really excited about it. I'm thinking that in .260 might be one of the coolest semis out at a decent price point when you consider the quality.

I don't have one, I just took possession of a DPMS style built by GAP in .308. Haven't shot her yet, but there are plenty of folks around here who have shot one and I have yet to find complaints.

Take a look at the LBC "monolith" .308. Another choice in a super accurate AR platform. Available in a variety of barrel lengths, with and without a brake (supressors also coming). Just got mine (review to follow). An expensive but interesting option

Thank you everyone for the feedback. I'm still unsure whether or not I'll go semi-auto or bolt. As far as semi-auto goes, I'm leaning towards the OBR (mainly because of my experience with LT and knowing they'll back it 100%). I'm still looking at the POF and like some of the piston advantages (cool and clean upper receiver). I would like to put my hands on a POF to finger #@$! it, but haven't found that luxury yet....For now it appears it will be between the OBR and Sako TRG 22

I got to play with a new POF yesterday with the new rail they have. Its very clean and I was very impressed with it. Def look at the POF . You wont be sorry

its not out yet but spike tactial is coming out with a nonrecpricating side charge handle in 308 should be bad ass
