I just bought a rem700 .308 sps varmint and now I'm looking for glass it's a 26" heavy barrel . I will be shooting out to 500 yards for now till I get some trigger time in then looking to reach out to 1000 . I would like to keep it under $1000 any help would be great.

I went with the Vortex PST 6-24x FFP Mil/Mil. Love it.

And buying used on Vortex is a no brainer. Life time, no questions asked, transferable warranty. :)

The SWFA SS 3-15x42 is a great value, worth checking out. The new Burris XTR II 3-15x50 looks very nice for under $1k as well. FFP, has zero stop and illumination. The Vortex PST is still a very solid sub $1k scope. The Sightrons, Weavers, and Bushnells mentioned are all great scopes too. Lots of great choices these days.

I would either buy the SWFA 10x42 mil/mil (which I have and love for the money) and buy more ammo, or I would save another ~$200 and get the USO ST-10. The ST-10 is a world class scope, and it's significantly less expensive than other USOs just because it's fixed power.

I agree ^^^^ I love my USO ST 10 and I own 2 VV PST FFP scopes much better glass and resolution than my VV scopes although they are good scopes at their price point..

from my experience of building my stick over time and lay away with my gun shop. I would really look at saving some cash or getting a lay away deal and buy the following. Bushnell hdmr 3.5 x 21 with the tremor 2 reticle and the larue Lt111 mount. I did have a leupold Mark 4 but it failed and I seen and heard of several mk 4 failing in the l.e. world.

I got a scope from Bushnell on a loan with their l.e. program and then bought it.

Vortex PST are great scopes and they are in the price range you are looking at. Another good one is the Bushnell 6-24x Tactical with the G2 reticle. We stock both scopes.

Mike @ CSTACTICAL

I just bought a 1-4x mrad PST and a 4-16x mrad FFP PST as well as another ADM Recon X. Mike hooked me up with a very good deal just for being a SH member. He also took the time to speak to me on the phone on several occasions. Hell, one time I caught him during a lunch break. Never once did he make me feel like he was doing me a favor. All my dumb questions were answered which didn't seem as dumb as I thought after talking to Mike. So whether your looking for a PST or a crazy priced MK 8, Mike is a solid dude to deal with. Even though it takes a few extra days in shipping(being in different countries and all), CS Tactical will be my default optics store for all future optic purchases. [/shamelessplug]

SWFA SS 5-20x50 Illum. and same w/o Illum. $1500. Illum. and $1300 w/o. You will find them used on the Optics for Sale section with some regularity.
In new or as new condition they will run about $1200.00 shipped for Illum. and $1100.00 for non Illum.

If you don't need FFP for unknown distance targets, you can get by with a lot less. The vortex viper 6.5-20x44 or 50 can usually be bought used in the $300.00 to $400.00 in new or ANIB condition. They have target turrets, side parallax adj. and glass that is adequate at 1000 yds. Vortex has possibly the best warranty in the industry so you can buy used with confidence.
