I bought 200 rounds of ammo from a certain manufacturer (im not gonna say the name right now because i dont want to bad mouth them.) I'm shooting them through my factory SPS Tactical chambered in a .308 that has 585 rounds through it. I noticed that on the neck of each casing of this ammo was a strange burn mark that i'd never seen before. Other than these marks, the ammo seemed to shoot well, 5 shot groups were .95 inches at 100 yards and had one group of 5 that was .56 inches. I've only shot 25 rounds of it and the last one i fired got stuck in the chamber. I decided to stop and examine the cases and compare them to all of the other ones i've fired in the gun. The old casings did not have the burn marks that these did, only a few had small marks.... so i'm wondering, is this normal?

that's funny when someone says they're not going to say who, but am I the only one that gets curios and checks their recent post to find out?

That has happend to mine as well usually with federal ammo.
but after i have fired 50 rounds or so. I have also been curios about this. I always just figured it was because of the heat in the chamber.

Try and neck size them and shoot again and see if it is better.Sometimes you will get what I call blow by on cases and they will look like that. But after fired in the gun it blows it out to the chamber but I think they will be alright. In my match dies I can change the bushing for the neck to make the neck diameter larger or smaller. But I believe you will be fine.

Just a little soot getting around the neck before pressure seals it up. Usually a sign of a relatively low pressure load. </div></div>

Would definitely be my guess, I was ladder testing some loads Tuesday and the necks had progressively more soot on them as the powder charges got lighter.

+1 to this.

Mine never did this either.

Nope.

And I have never seen this in my SPS with Southwest Ammo, or Federal. I did see some soot/ blowback marks with Winchester though, but the ammunition was old and I was just burning it up. All of the Hornady brass I have shot has probably been the cleanest of the bunch.

Re: 308 sps tac, is this normal ??!?

The 585 rounds were all Federal factory ammo, and i never experienced anything like this except on 4 or 5 cases. I've saved every casing i've shot and i looked at each one to make sure.
