308 Steyr or Remington 700 AAC-SD

I am just starting out in Long Range serious shooting and have the opportunity to purchase a Steyr 762x54 bolt action rifle that has a fiberglass stock that is glass beaded. The seller indicates the rifle has about 800 rounds shot through the rifle. The Steyr is in .308 asking $550

What are your thoughts vs. purchasing the New Remington 700 AAC SD? I would have to throw away the stock on the remington and glass bed another stock.

I perfer the Steyr for the price if only 800 rounds fired. But you have to make sure which model is it(if it's the SBS Tactical Heavy barrel, take it right the way )? If suppressor, heavy barrel, aftermarket accessories and custom works are more important to you, take the 700. Steyr sbs and ssg actions feel better in my hands. Make sure you handle both stocks before you buy, I think aac has Hogue stocks, which I don't really like.

If its the steyr SBS tactical you can also upgrade the stock to a Mcmillan.

Unless its an ssg PIIK (20" barrel) an ssg 69 is the older version with the (knife edge) bolt where as the PII (26") and PIIK (20")

so your not really comparing apples to apples with an Remington aac (20" threaded and capped barrel)

Steyr will be a pressed in barrel 1:12 twist the remington a threaded in barrel with 1:10 twist.

What are you wanting to do with it? What changes are you wanting to make, things your wanting to add? These are two completely different rifles and not a apples to apples comparison.

The only other data that i have at the moment was the rifle was purchased new in 2003. SSG 69 I am not sure of the other yet.

This will be my first long range shooter other than a deer rifle semi auto. I want to work on building my skill at precision shooting. For me right now I would be please to hit 500 or 600 yards and keep building and reaching out further as my skills develops.

Take it. $550 for a SSG 69 is unbeatable price. If you don't want it, let me know. I will take it.

Screw it, Ill go $800 for the SSG69.

Fact of the matter is they are great rifles with 2 big down falls.
First the good:
They have a super smooth 60 degree action with a great extractor. The single (nonset) triggers are some of the best made! They are very precise in their opertation and have a lot of adjustment built in them. They have very well made super accurate hammer forged barrels.
Now the bad or not so good:
The bottom metal is not, its plastic and tends to crack. The magizines are also plastic and tend to crack. They are of a rotery design and do feed well but they just are not very tough. The barrels are pressed in as stated (although I do think there was a model that was threaded, the PIV I think). Also the stocks tend to flex a bit however Mcmillan offers a good upgrade.

In my opinion they are neet rifles that have a lot to offer and would be one of the best out there if someone could come up with some aftermarket parts to address the issues they have.
