I am trying to get some information on a varmint load for the .308 WIN. I am aware that the .308 is overkill for coyotes and other small game, but at this time (baby on the way) I am unable to get a new rifle. I have been reading up on the Sierra 110 varminter and of course the Hornady 110 v-max. I can't seem to find any load data on these specific rounds with varget or 4064. I called Sierra and they told me that they have tested 4064 with their 110gr varminter at 43.5-49.1, but no varget. Hornday told me that they have no load data for neither 4064 nor varget.

Anyone here reload a 110gr out of a .308win? with 4064 or varget?

Re: .308 varmint load

my lyman book states a 110 JHP with 4064 @ 45-50C. Is it safe to assume that this load range will work with any 110gr projectile?

*starting at the lowest and working up to max while looking for excessive pressure signs of course*

Re: .308 varmint load

I would consider a 125 Nosler BT. With the 110 the bullet will be a little flatter, but the energy will be fall off at about 300Y. The 125 will drop about 3 mil at 500Y with enough energy to knock a yotes socks off (if they wore socks).

Another good thing about the 125, is you put them over 38 of H4895 and you have a nice youth load, with equal trajectory as a 168 or 175 full load (up to 250 Y). With the youth load you do not need to re-zero your scope, similar to Remington's managed recoil load.

Re: .308 varmint load

I did some load workup with the 110gr Barnes TTSX, and the 110gr VMax. You might be able to extrapolate some of this data to get a starting poing with your powders.

26" Rem 700 SPS Varmint

110gr Barnes TTSX
Win brass
CCI 200
2.79" OAL

RL-7
44.0 gr - 3346 fps, .75 moa (chrono at 30 ft, target at 155 yards, 4-shot groups)
45.0 gr - 3392 fps, .75 moa
46.0 gr - 3476 fps, 1.2 moa (slightly stiff bolt)
47.0 gr - 3543 fps 1.2 moa (stiff bolt, ejector smear)

W748
54.5 gr - 3322 fps, .75 moa
55.0 gr - 3347 fps, 1.5 moa
55.5 gr - 3413 fps, 1.0 moa

......................................
20.5" Rem SPS Varmint bbl.
110 VMax, Moly'd
2.75" OAL
AA2230C
52gr - 3190 fps
53gr - 3250 fps
54gr - 3300 fps
55gr - 3345 fps, slightly stick bolt

Re: .308 varmint load

This was my experience as well. Varget isn't the best powder for the light bullets.

I had good results with IMR 8208 XBR and the 110 V-Max. One of my favorite light loads for my rifle is with a 125 gr Berger FB and 48.2 8208 XBR.
