Hey Guys,

As the subject line states. What would you do?

A friend and I went shooting this past week and he witnessed the gun shoot .4 -.5 100 yd groups with 168 FGMM and decided he wants it. He's offer 4k for the compelte setup. Picture below.

I was already on the fence about building a 260Rem in an AICS or purchasing an AE MKIII to have in addition to the AR. But now with him offering to purchase the AR, I could put the additional funds of the AICS OR MKIII build towards the purchase of an AW.

I've never owned a bolt gun and would love to have one. But I don't know which way to go?!?!?

I shoot 100-600 yards twice a month. Would like to stretch out my shooting legs abit, but I live in Toluca Lake, so city is not condusive to some good shooting. Closest I have available is Angeles.

Any advice or insight would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,

-Jason

AE would serve just fine. If you have a custom r700 in an AICS (like from GAP or numerous other custom builders that you can find here), then you would be in a no-lose situation with any rifle you choose.

That's what I would do too. I have a Gap built ar-10 and a Remington 5R for now but will eventually get the AIAE. In the meantime, I am getting a Whiskey 3 chassis and getting the 5r chopped to 18" and having a brake installed.

nothing wrong with remingtons or custom actions but AI rifles are just bad ass. my AW is my baby, and my gap 10 is bad ass

You're totally right. I was trying to be very logical. BUT, if I could afford an AW, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. But, both my custom r700s really can shoot.

Re: 308AR for AW OR Keep AR & Build AICS OR AR & AEMK3

Km i have some r700's too, i have a surgeon, templar, m2008, DTA, etc

there is just something about the AI actions,

I wouldn't be replacing my current 308AR with another gasser...If I was gonna get rid of my current gasser, it would only be for the AW in this case.

GAP is awesome though =)

Re: 308AR for AW OR Keep AR & Build AICS OR AR & AEMK3

I'd keep it. You only have access to 600 yards right now, and can shoot 1/2MOA with it. You are familiar with the gun, and I assume already have dope for it. Good setup, good glass, good groups, and good distance for a .308 AR. Until you are closer to a longer range, I wouldn't worry about it. Start saving money for a bolt gun, if you want, but no hurry.

Re: 308AR for AW OR Keep AR & Build AICS OR AR & AEMK3

As stated above, the AE will do just fine. I have one and love it. I've shot an AW and the two shoot and feel the same. Only difference is that the AW action is permanently bonded to the chassis.

That is a good point...thank you for some input.

<-- Disenter

I'd be happy with either an AE or an AW (I have an AW), but I would start working the For Sale Section for either model that had the caliber, features, and extras that I wanted; and close on the best 'deal'. There have been several AI offerings as of late.

Good luck

Re: 308AR for AW OR Keep AR & Build AICS OR AR & AEMK3

I love guns. I have a LMT MWS coming as well, but when my gap10 shoots as well as most of my custom bolt guns I will plead its case

Enough Said!

Honestly AW is built more of a Winter Warfare Friendly Heavy Duty Model. But For us everyday folks, unless you aboslutely have to have the BEST then AIAE is just fine. As mentioned above, it'll shoot the same, action/trigger/feel has very little difference. Then add on the GAP 10 and you'll have the BEST of BOTH Worlds!

Trust me bro...there's Already Tons of guys on this Forum right now that'd LOVE to be in your shoes! so stop Teasing us! LOL

Re: 308AR for AW OR Keep AR & Build AICS OR AR & AEMK3

I'd probably go for a .260 or a 6.5 Creedmoor AE variant to maximize the 6.5 short action cartridges capabilities and then have a gas gun for .308.

The AI would just be classy and give you something capable well past 1000. For the realistic effective ranges of a .308, a good gas gun can do everything you need.

Re: 308AR for AW OR Keep AR & Build AICS OR AR & AEMK3

The AE's are nice, but think about if you went that route, and then down the line you'll be asking yourself if you should have bought the AW. I could have had an AE several years before I bought my AW but I am definitely glad I held out for the AW. Just my $0.02

Re: 308AR for AW OR Keep AR & Build AICS OR AR & AEMK3

I have an AW and I love it, but if had to make the choice the OP has to make, I'd be just as happy with an AE MkIII if that meant being able to keep the AR 308. With the MkIII upgrades the only thing the AW has over the AE is quicker barrel changes and double column magazines. I'd say the accuracy of the AW vs. AE is a draw for all practical purposes.

Re: 308AR for AW OR Keep AR & Build AICS OR AR & AEMK3

Thanks for the replies everybody.

My only concern with purchasing an AI rifle is the availability of replacement parts in a hurry. I keep spare everything for my rifles minus barrel and receiver. So would anybody happen to know if you can order replacement bolt assembly and trigger pack for the mkIii? And if so does anybody have a ball park on their cost? With a rem clone like a surgeon build, parts are so easily available, just a piece of mind for me.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Jason

talk to randy at mile high he will take care of ya. you can get spare parts for anything AI that is the beauty of the system, its all operator level stuff.
