The highest power scope i have is a 14x Mark 4 and I shoot at most 600 yards. I've bought a AR50 and plan to streach it out and thought of getting the 5.5-22 NF then noticed the 32& 42 power scopes. My questions is at what power are you wasting money because of mirage and other things causing you to back off to your min when shooting @1000+yards.

Well, I never use anything over 15x (although the Vortex Razor might change that) and 24-25x with high quality glass is about the max I would ever want. A 6-24x or 5-25x is the quintessential long range optic, but for the reasons you state above, I really like higher quality optics at lower magnifications ranges.

What range are you planing on shooting? I shoot my 50's out to 2 miles and my 40X scope is great for that. However that is just screwing around. Most of my shooting is 400-1500yds I generally keep the scope around 20-30 power most of the time. I personally would get at least a 32power scope for a 50. I have a SS 20X on my second gun and it is great for daytime shooting out to 1000yd but after that I would prefer more power.

You have to really have the right circumstances to use all that power. I have a 12-42 BR model. In Kentucky I can rarley ever use it all. I would not buy it again. I would buy another 5.5-22 for my purposes. But if it is target or f-class. YOu can always turn it down. If it is only target you will never need to go below 12. My 2 cents.

I own both the 5.5-22x NXS and the 12-42x NXS for FT/R class. The lower power scope I used this past year to shoot competitively (600-1000 yards) It worked fine through all the seasons in NC. The 12-42x was purchased to give me clearer image of the X ring. The mirage is more obvious with higher power, but you can always crank it down. They are both great scopes for target shooting (which is what I do). The 5.5-22x does have the zero-stop which is very useful when switching from 600 to 1000 or visa-versa.

The longest range near me is 1000 yards. I hope to find somewhere further but I know with my spotting scope mirage can be a bitch (20-60) I think I'll stick with the 5.5-22 to be safe. I could always buy another scope.
