.338 Decisions .. Going crazy.

Yep another one of those...

I will preface this with: Trust me Ive been READING NON-Stop. I've been lookin at the same info 5 hours a day
smile.gif
Its all ive been doing for the past month.

I tried to avoid the question cause im sure you guys hate stuff like this
smile.gif
But im goin crazy here.. Im looking for a new rifle in .338. Im trying to decide between another AW, an AX, MRAD, or SRS. I'm completely ready to pull the trigger. I have quotes in hand for all 4. I just cant choose! Everone will say you cant go wrong with any of them.

Here is my current thought process. Can anyone please fill me in on an additional opinions / experiences. Maybe a little imput and even just me typing these out will help me decide

AWM:
Pros: LOVE LOVE my aw 308. Love look, Love feel,
Cons: Already have an AW variety is the spice of life:), AWM is a an oldermodel (not really is a bad thing) Will C.I.P be an issue? I havnt shot 338 yet? I ultimately will be reloading as well.

AX:
Pros: Its an AI, Next Gen.
Cons: kinda ugly, bit pricey

MRAD:
Pros: Love the look,
Cons: Cant find much real info other than marketing and a couple vids and few posts.

SRS:
Pros: Very cool size and design.
Cons: Also size and Design

Maybe too odd for me.

Couple follow up points. I know there are many other options. Even cheaper options as well as more extravagant options. These are the 4 i have my heart set on. I know accuracy is top notch with all 4 and they are all better than I. So its a matter of personal preference at this point. If these things were cheaper id get all of them but gonna go all in with 1 so have to make sure i got as much info as possible so I feel good about the choice.

AX. The others are certainly good options but if you aren't feeling pulled in one direction then I'd default to the AIAX.

Best thing would be to get behind as many of them as you can and see what you like; however if you love your AW then you will more than likely love the AX.

Re: .338 Decisions .. Going crazy.

I dont know off the top of my head what the twist rates are on the rifles you mentioned, but you might check and make sure they all will perform with the bullets you want to use

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those choices, so if you can't decide let chance do it for you - flip a coin twice.

I should do that. Usually when you flip a coin it helps you decide before it lands.

But i am now leaning toward the AX.

Re: .338 Decisions .. Going crazy.

AWSM .338, great weapons system, proven and if you are comfortable with the AW you currently have, you will be nothing but pleased with the magnum series. Limiting factor will be the CIP ammo, no going to work unless you single load (NO magazine feed ability) unless you run NON-CIP ammo. The weapon will prefer the 250gr ammo as well.

AX .338, new completely updated long range solution, extremely comfortable, great trigger upgrade, new barrel twist (1/9.3") for your 300gr ammo, will accommodate all CIP .338 ammo and the magazine (double stack) very similar to your AW, which is really nice for loading and combat loading. The new butt spike is dramatically improved as well. You can always take off the rails on the tube to make less "military" in appearance which is nice as well.

My vote, hard to say, but honestly I would go with the AX more times than choosing the AWSM. Hope this helps.

Re: .338 Decisions .. Going crazy.

have you considered having a rig built to suit your wants/needs? I went that route instead of just buying one. I am not saying you should or that it would be better. Just an option if you aren't sure what to buy from the factory. Basically it all comes down to personal choice...... no real help but this one is on you alone.

Re: .338 Decisions .. Going crazy.

bowstryder, Thanks that is probably the smarter choice but for some reason i just have to have one of those 4. I dont have a better explination than that

still leanin heavily ax now. The look is growin a bit on me. Do you guys expect the ax to be a long term winner. Ie do you think resale value down the road will be acceptable?

Re: .338 Decisions .. Going crazy.

s2jesse,

Have you given thought to a TRG-42? Roughly half the cost of the AE series and gives up nothing in terms of accuracy. That's a lot of extra scratch for better glass and ammo.

Re: .338 Decisions .. Going crazy.

Im not gonna lie, the answer is just for plain fun. Same reason i built a grendel and other odd calibers. There is some strange itch inside me making me want a 338. In reality there is no need for me to every purchas another rifle ever again. But hey why do girls have 100 pairs of shoes

Re: .338 Decisions .. Going crazy.

Incidentally, where can you shoot beyond 1000 yards in your AO? I grew up near there and can't remember a range longer than 300m at most. Yes, you can go to 1000 yards at Sac, but from my experience .338LM feels like it's just getting started at that distance. You'll quickly want to take it past that.
