Trying to decide between the two.

I figger 300RUM brass necked up to 338 will save some $$$$ over 338LM brass, which only means I'll get to shoot more, not save money. So slight "edge" to the Edge.

Boolits are the same. Powder also. Wash.

Any other factors that should sway me?

I prefer a shorter fatter case so I can seat my bullets longer vs. the longer 338 edge case and having to seat my bullets dealer to achieve the same OAL. But I do prefer the improved version of 338 lapua

I know a guy that shoots an edge in his F-open gun, and he says it kicks like a mule. That's in a 22lb rifle. It could be really rough in something in the 12-14lb range. I have never personally shot either of these cartridges, so I can't provide anything too useful.

As for that, my rifle weighs 14lbs with optics, unloaded, with a Muscle brake on the barrel. I was surprised how the recoil was. I think it kicks somewhere between a .308 and .30-06.

Fclass rifles cannot have a muzzle brake, a good friend of mine has a light (14lbs) 338 edge with a very good brake on it and it doesn't kick anymore than an unbraked 308.

As stated by Leadbullet, we can't use brakes in F-Class. I hear the Muscle brake is a very efficient design, so it's probably mitigating a great deal of the felt recoil. I can't remember the exact MV he said he was getting with his rifle, but it surprised me... I want to say 3,400 fps W/ a 300. I remember him telling me it takes 16 minutes to get to 1k from his 200 yard zero. It takes my 308 33 minutes... He is a fantastic shooter, with 18 current and past national records and 26 natl records have been set with rifles he's built, and he is a fan of the edge. That counts for something in my book.

There is no way he is getting 3400 with a 300 gr bullet in the Edge. It is not possible.

338 Edge Ackley Improved will be my next build. As soon as I wear out my 300 Rum barrel. 30" barrel w/Fat Bastard and a XLR chassis is the plan. I crunched the numbers and the Edge has the lead in my book the Ackley Improved part really sweetened the deal. Just wish I could find a Mag that held more then 4 rounds. Don't ask me why.

No. You have to open the bolt face for the Lapua. Some smiths won't build a 338 Lapua on a Remington action.

Most smiths won't. 338lm is a fat cartridge. Once you ream the barrel you will have removed a good amount of material, leaving that much less to contain the 60,000 psi cup pressure. Most lapua rifles are purpose built with either a thicker receiver, larger barrel tenon, different metallurgy, or a combination of the three.
That is why the edge is gaining in popularity. It can be built on a standard long action mag bolt face. Only downside is its hard to find a long enough magazine for it if you want a repeater.

Shawn Carlock @ Defensive Edge is offering properly headstamped 338 Edge brass now (Bertram IIRC). It's touted as being pretting damn strong to boot. His Edge +P chambering is pretty damn intriguing too.

So I called my buddy, since nothing I said was making any sense to you guys. It looks like I need to listen a little closer sometimes. He gets right around 3,000 fps with a 300 and it takes about 21 MOA to get to 1k. I confused the edge with a 300 Buff. The Buff shoots a 185 berger at 3,400 fps and takes 16moa to get to 1k from 300.

I'm sorry I stuck my foot in my mouth on this one. I guess I was in over my head This time. I will, however, stand by my comment that he said the recoil is punishing over a 60rd course of fire. Outside of that, I don't know nada.

It's either a 30" or 32" Bbl, I don't really remember. I was talking to him about ordering a barrel for my TR gun today, and I just asked him passingly. The Edge sounds pretty beastly. It sounds like it would be a better option than a 338LM if you already had a LA mah 700 action on hand and wanted an accurate screamer.
