338 Lapua, AR30?, TRG?, BA110?, Rem 700? Custom?

I'm kinda new to ELR, so bear with me.

Ok, so. I just sold(got rid of) a Remington 700 PSS in 338LM. I tried handloads(235,250,300gr Lapua/Scenar), boxed Hornady 250gr, boxed Cor-Bon 250gr and 300gr, Black Hills 250 and 300gr.

No matter what, I could not get sub-moa with this rifle. And yes, I can shoot sub moa.

In my frustrations, I sold it.

I stumbled across a deal, and purchased an AR30 with low round count, jewel trigger, and some other goodies. I have not fired it yet, still raining. I am excited to see what my accuracy will be with this rifle, and I have even started a thread elsewhere looking for load development feedback in regards specifically to the AR30.

I want to take advantage of the access to 600 acres I am blessed with, and I have determined 338LM as my caliber, and around $3000 as my rifle budget(not including optics).

Any ways, my question is.

<span style="font-weight: bold">TRG-42?</span> 1:10 or 1:12? obviously 1:10 for 300 grainers since I want to engage ELR.

<span style="font-weight: bold">AR30?, </span>which I already have, but not afraid of selling it.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Savage BA110?</span> Kinda ugly, but willing to put function in front of cosmetics.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Remington 700?</span> already had it, but should I have been more patient, rebarreled it? muzzle brake, trigger, etc...

<span style="font-weight: bold">Custom</span> Obviously my first choice, but my budget is kinda tapped out at $3000 and I dont think I can go this route with this budget.

Out-of-the-box, a TRG-42 with 1-10 twist will get you to at least 1500 yards depending on your handloading ability, ability to read winds, and apply changes for atmospheric conditions. It has good ergonomics, an excellent trigger, and is fairly light.

The Remington, re-barreled with a premium 1-9 barrel and fitted with a good brake and Jewell trigger is a good, cost-effective solution. The factory barrel is good, but not great. It will obviously go bang, but is a mass-produced tube.

The AR30 is a good weapon with primary extraction issues once you start loading for heavier bullets and higher pressures.

The Savage BA-110 is an entry option with rough edges and growing pains. It has the ergonomics and after-market potential of a re-bar rod.

I was just out shooting some ELR yesterday with some knowledgeable people.

One of the guys has owned/owns some very exotic rifles.He really likes TRG's!!! I know you know all about twists and projectiles

so I'll say no more.

ETA OOPS...got you mixed up with another fella.Pick the 10 twist and shoot 300 Bergers.

Euro Optics advertised some great deals on the TRG-42 recently. I forget the exact prices, but they were well under $2800 for the .338 Lapua. I'm going there tomorrow to pick up a TRG-22. If I were you, I'd send them an email and see what they can do for you. I have no affiliation with Euro Optics, I've just been really impressed with the way they do business.

There is a thread here where a Finish sniper hit a target on the second round at 2008 meters (I think) with a 12 twist -42 and 250 gr. Scenars, I don't think you can even buy a non 10" twist (new) anymore. Regardless, don't discount the 250's.
I have a 10" -42 and love it. I shoot exclusively 250's and have been VERY happy with the results (Lapua brass, Scenars, 90 gr. H4831SC).
The trigger out of the box is pure bliss, and the ergonomics of the rifle are exceptional.
Downside? The rifle is MUCH more consistent than I am...but I'm trying to correct that <G>
Word of caution: get the muzzle brake. You probably are already aware of this, but an unbraked .338 will beat the shit out of you.

I have owned the AR-30 and currently own a 700 MLR.

The AR-30 was an excellent shooter and a solid 1/2 MOA rig. The only reason I sold it was on account of the ergonomics of the rifle. That, coupled with very few aftermarket options led me to the MLR.

My MLR was fitted with a Badger FTE brake and an AZ Precision bolt knob. Aside from that, the factory HS stock was bedded. No other work was done to the barrled action.

After load development, it is uncannily scary how accurate the rifle is. I won't say anything aside from the fact that it shoots WELL under 1/2 MOA with my pet load running 250gr SMK's with RL 19 at 2860fps. With factory Lapua 250gr Scenar fooder, it averaged just under 1/2 MOA.

It took a bit to work a good load up for the MLR, but after I found a good recipe for it I couldn't be happier. As for the accuracy in the MLR's, ask mm128 here how my recipe shoots through his rig. He's getting indentical results in the accuracy department as I am with my pet load.

I'd have to agree, the Sako is the best bang for the buck!!! If you have the $5500-$6500 to get into the Accuracy International, go for it. If you're looking for a rock solid action for a great price, the Sako is the way to go. My .338 Sako shoots sub MOA all day long with just about every kind of ammo I feed her. I've had ok luck with Hornady stuff and would never shoot Black Hills thru such a nice piece. Besides those I've shot Corbon, Lapua, Federal, and handloads and they've all performed really well. In fact as far as handloads go, this is one of my rifles that I've seen the most improvement out of with a really good load recipe. I've shot 3" groups at 600 yards at blackwater north with my handloads!!! Hope this helps

On a side note...the only real draw back to the TRG family of rifles is the cost of their accesories. The bipod (one of the best i've ever used is $500), the extra mags ($180), and the muzzle brake ($200)!!! I have all of these things on my rifle, but was lucky to get the whole package with all of the listed items for $1900 while i was working at a local dealer thru Beretta's employee purchase program. Had i not been working there i may have gone a different/cheaper route

This is a video of my TRG at TVP in Ohio. The TRG is a 1:12 firing 250gr Scenars at 2810fps. All the targets are 12"X12" steel.
1st Target: 600yds
2nd Traget: 1000yds (Check out the wind flags at 600yds and 1000yds.)
3rd Target: 1760yds (1 Mile)

If (a) you plan on using more than one caliber and (b) can afford it - I'd go for DTA SRS (or Covert). In fact I did.

338 LM is great - but my teacher taught me that it's waste of money to use on targets closer than say 1000m (OK, maybe 800m). This (plus the fun cost per-round) made a <span style="text-decoration: underline">dedicated</span> 338 LM rifle totally impractical for me - not to mention expensive - as I don't have access to such a range most of the time (don't know about you and your constraints, of course). But SRS allows me to keep practicing with the rifle and keep myself honest with 308 (and I'm planning to add 260 Rem later on for the fun of it), while 338 LM conversion kit doesn't get exercised much - until I've a chance to shoot long-range.

So far, this has been very enlightening.

I'm leaning towards TRG if I decide production rifle.

I'm also talking to Shawn at Defensive Edge, about one of his Canyon rifles(tiny bit over my budget). I'm not trying to start a Edge vs Lapua debate, I think the similarities in ballistics, are close enough to justify looking at a custom built rifle in either of the two calibers.

I'm going to look in to DTA as well.

Keep 'em comin, I'm ready to pull the trigger but still need help.

My AR30 will hold 1/2 MOA with handloads. The only upgrade I have made is the trigger. I am using the 300g SMK and VV N170 powder. With the NXS 5.5-22x56mm it is a pleasure to shoot at 1000 yards.

Figure reloading components into your initial purchase. Use Lapua brass as it seems to last the longest. Unless you're independently wealthy buying factory ammo is not for the faint of heart.

I've had the the ar 30 338lm for a year now and it's been a solid 1/2 moa or less at 800 yards with factory hornady ammo. I researched the crap out of this rifle as I was on a budget and never really could find anything faulty with the accuracy. They finally came out with the stock adapter so you can change the stock which is nice! Go shoot it and let us know how you do! Well, when it quits raining on ya!

You could probably come close to building a custom for $3000 if you REALLY wanted to, but a TRG42 seems to be the go to gun for getting into 338 Lapua.

I also have a DTA SRS in 338 LM. I found that load development was more finicky for the 338 than most other calibers. I shoot Hornaday brass, Rem 9 1/2 M primer, and 300 Scenars seated .005 out of lands. I went through Retumbo, and H1000 before getting to RE 25. With RE 25 everything fell into place. I'm currently running 89 grains (yes over max) getting 2680 FPS and 1/4 MOA at 100 yards. With the other powders and some Black Hills factory I had hell getting below 1 MOA.

I believe that some rifles just need a lot of trail and error to work. No matter which one you choose, just put the time in with your load and you will be happy.

These are solid 1/2 MOA guns with factory Lapua ammo. I've personally confirmed that with three of these and seen the same from at least four others. Add their complete modularity and they can't be beat.

I had a trg-42 with 10 twist and it shot lights out. The acessories are expensive, but I have started to see a slight drop in prices at some vendors.

You should have rebarreled that remington. I personally would never leave the factory barrel on a rem 700, in my experience they are just not too good.

A Sako TRG would serve you well. Best gun I have ever seen, apart from some custom builds. Those can well be in your budget, if you build yourself: I´m planning on building this, once I´ve saved up a little cash:

Stiller Tac 300 action
AICS Stock
Jewell Trigger
Krieger Barrel
+small parts & goodies

I´m hoping on some really nice accuracy out of that system. All in all, without glass and bipod its going to be around $2400, the TRG is around $3200, at the time. So you might be able to afford some better glass with a build.

Are you including bottom metal in your math? Or does it come with the action?

Also, since Alex(eurooptic) if offering the TRG's at $2600 delivered to your door, it will be hard to beat.

And, yes, part of me wonders if I should have just re-barreled the Rem.....

If my opinion is of any consideration, for 2600 delivered, you have to go with the TRG. Best trigger I have used to date and shoots at least 1/2 MOA. You can't beat that performance out of a factory rifle.

Extreme, yes you should definitely go with a 1:10 or better with the 338. But do realize that you can get out pretty far with 250s. I have hit out to a mile with the 250 SMK. The 300s give you a little bit of an edge in the wind, but the bullet will still blow around noticeably in 10-15 mph gusts. But my best 1000 yd groups have been with the 250s. Still have some load development to do with the 300s.

So, range report with my AR30 today.

100 yards, Shot 5 different groups, 'five shot groups'.

4 different loads. 1 load was shot twice

1. Cor-Bon factory ammo 300 grain, 4 shots were .3" with 1 flyer 1"

2. Handloaded 300 gr Scenar, 3 shots 1 hole, 1 shot .5" out. 1 shot .87" out (I really need to learn to hold steady).

3. Southwest Ammo(Arizona)300gr factory loads, 3 shots .25", 1 shot .6" out, 1 shot .87" out. (I really REALLY need to learn to hold steady)

4. Lapua Scenar 250gr factory ammo, .75" group, again, I'm sure its me.

5. My shooting partner shot 1 group of the same Southwest Ammo stuff above, his was .5"!! he shot my rifle better than I did.

All in all, I'm very happy with the performance of the AR30. Today was my first time shooting it. It was 50 degrees and foggy. I just installed a cheek riser, and I was still trying to get comfortable with it. I'm not too excited with the Jewel trigger, which is weird because I love my jewel on my 7wsm. On my AR30 its not very crisp. Any ideas?

I'll try to figure out how to post pics of the groups. Not that they're worth bragging about.

I feel much better about the 338 lapua caliber in general today.

I'm really looking forward to my next rifle, what ever it is.

Figuring the TRG at $2600 plus brake $200 = $2800 delivered.
Then a custom at $3500.

What am I sacrificing with a TRG vs a custom?

Nothing really. I've had custom guns in the past, and will have a new .300 whisper build next year, but IMHO I don't think the TRG's lose much to a custom by any stretch.

Well, you'd have the ability to say "I have a custom________", AND a six-month plus wait...

IMHO nothing. I bought a TRG from Alexat EuroOptics on Tuesday. I'm still saving for the scope I'd like, but just fondling the TRG feels quite impressive. The ergonomics are outstanding and the trigger is the best I've ever felt. I vote TRG.

I'm pretty sure the stock trigger is a Schilen. But, since the AR30 takes a Remington style trigger, the opportunities are endless. I just sold my AR30, yesterday on GB. I agree with you, it is probably one of the better entry level 338 Lapua rifles.

TRG vs custom(I know there's another topic here on the hide) but I haven't heard the answer yet.

Figuring the TRG at $2600 plus brake $200 = $2800 delivered.
Then a custom at $3500.

What am I sacrificing with a TRG vs a custom?

I've got a TRG and I love it (it's a 308) with the exception of the stock, which is where you sacrifice some IMO. Mine is the non-folder, which is what you are talking about sub 3k in price. With the fixed stock, you have to buy fixed spacers, which is a retarded design, they should have put an easily adjustable thumbwheel in there...and same on stock length, which is not quite as critical to me, and the fixed spacers will work OK, but like folks have said, SAKO accessories are brutally expensive. Of course you sacrifice 6 months or more waiting on a custom! I would do the TRG in a heartbeat, and there are rumors of a Hide member building a new stock for the TRG's...interesting for sure, a new Buttstock is all it needs IMO, that would bolt up to the chassis like the factory piece!

The two stage trigger on the TRG is just awesome to me, I would put one on every rifle I own if it was possible! BTW, a buddy of mine has over 1200 rounds through his 338LM TRG, and it shoots awesome still.

The AR-30 was an excellent shooter and a solid 1/2 MOA rig. The only reason I sold it was on account of the ergonomics of the rifle. That, coupled with very few aftermarket options led me to the MLR.

Reading this kinda sets my mind at ease. I transitioned from the .50(DTC) to the .338LPM so I am terribly wet behind the ears in many aspects of the cartridge, the platforms it shares and the intricacies of extreme distance shooting.
I explored a few otions from mild to wild but my budget dictates reality.
I was able to recently acquire a NIB Remington 700 for about 1100.00. I have been trolling through pages of threads trying to collect enough data to make an educated decision on where to go from here.
I am definately going to keep it since I can now clearly see that a little patience pays of big for those willing to put in the time with these.
My rig is naked at this point aside from a sling and steel bipod. I need a little direction as to what I should do(besides rebarreling) to yield more considerable accuracy than what is offered from the factory???

I know I need a better muzzle device and I have looked into the FB,LB and RWS but I am in the dark as to other options. I would like to pick the best all around performer.
I can also see the stock and action may need some attention but I am in the dark as to where to send it and what to have done???

I feel like it is an incredible value compared to other options out there, especially since the price point allows for optics and custom work.

If you put a brake on it, and have intentions of rebarelling someday, then the money on the brake could be a waste. Just save up, re-barrel and brake at the same time. I wish I would have done that.

You're not going to be shooting a TRG for 3000 bucks. Sure, the rifle costs 2800, but after you put a brake, scope mount and rings you'll be closer to 3500, especially if you use Sako stuff.


I juts ordered an infidel from UGSW. Total build including threading the muzzle was 3475.
