I just bought a savage 110 FCP chambered in the 338 lapua mag. I have been hand loading for years but nothing ever this big. The barrel is a 1-9" twist , so I was thinking 300 smk or the new hybrid Berger . Anyone got any loads that I could try to start with?

Re: 338 lapua mag

With the 300 grain Bergers I found pressure at 92.5 grains of H1000. Hopefully I will have my accuracy load worked up later this week. Most people are finding 91-92 grains of H1000 working well.

Re: 338 lapua mag

With 300g bullets, start with close to max (94.0g IINM) with Retumbo. 94-95g seemed to work best for me with 300SMK in a Rem 700 (1:10 bbl). Try 250SMK too - my gun seemed to like them better (my shoulder did too)

Re: 338 lapua mag

I have used IMR 4350 with 300g. SMK's and groups averaged .5 to .75 MOA. I switched to Retumbo at 89.0 grains and groups went to .25 to .5 MOA. This is with a Armalite AR-30 and Norma brass. Next time I will get Lapua brass, Norma is a little too soft.

Do you find N570 to be temperature sensitive? I've always wanted to try it but was told it wasnt temp stable compared to H1000. I've yet to try either one, still gathering 338LM components.

Re: 338 lapua mag

300 gr SMK's - I'm running 92.5 gr retumbo (above 93 gave pressure for mine so be careful of what nimzoblanca posted)

250 Scenars - try 88-91 gr H4831sc or the same charges with VVN560

300 gr Berger OTM's- like stated above 89-92 gr H1000... Node lies somewhere between 91-92. And best results seem to be .010 off the lands.
