Hunting & Fishing .338 lapua or .300 wm and .308 w

Hey guys im new to the site and was wondering what you guys use for deer , moose and bear hunting. My question is what is the better round for distance and stoping power. The rifle im looking at is the Sako Trg 22/42 just not sure what is a better round.

A 308 is gonna easily kill anything you point it at. Not to mention it is the cheapest to shoot and has the least amount of recoil and muzzle blast of the three you listed. What kind of range are you looking at? If you are looking at 5-600 yards, I'd go 308.

Yep yep the others will work of course, but for hunting at close and medium ranges, the 308 will do it much more efficiently with regard to cost recoil etc.

I think the 300 mag is viable also, especially if you are going to be doing an long range target shooting. Good thing about it is that if you are loading your own rounds, you do not always have to be shooting full house full pressure 300 mag loads.

FWIW,. i love my .300WM 5r it will do everything i want it to do,.. the only problem ( and its not really a problem if your in shape & do PT. ) is its weight,.. my buddies that have 700's or M70's in .300WM for hunting rifles say my rifle feels like a anvil. but they love how it shoots & how low the recoil is even with the heavy 220gr. SMK's i shoot.(180 SST's for hunting)

as long as i have a bi-pod, pack, or set of shooting sticks, or some type of rest it makes for fun hunting, especially in wide open fields or any situation where i have to shoot from one hill or mountain to another.

now for the extra short to around 3-400yds i am looking at getting a short .308 like a Remy 700 SPS or the like in case i am ever need something smaller and lighter(and with out the extended range) than my .300WM

.308win is adequate for most things... people even shoot camels out here in Australia using the .308 and it drops them. And these animals weigh over a tonne!

.300winmag has a little extra reach and will allow you to better shoot the heavier projectiles at the cost of added recoil.

.338lapua will hands down beat both of the above but is very expensive to shoot, and unless you handload factory ammo wont be as easy to come by.

Another consideration in my opinion, would be the .300RSAUM or .300WSM... newer cases, much more efficient than the .300winmag and fits in a short action. Even better yet is the 7mmRSAUM or 7mmWSM, but theres more offerings for handloading in that round.

.308 will "Git 'R Done" on anything in North America. Just have to keep range and shot placement in mind on the largest game.

300WM for me. As for the argument "cheap to shoot" it's actually not that much cheaper than a WM and honestly if it's for HUNTING how many rounds are you actually going to fire in hunting situations? If you're talking about punching paper then the 308 gets my vote.

When I go visit my buddy in Bandera, Tx.... He lets me shoot hogs with his AR50 using .50BMG APIT rounds.

Honestly, my 308 has never failed to drop any animal I shot. Get set up with a 1:12 twist 20" barrel, then use Hornady 168gr amax.

That barrel and round has killed many of game for me.

Most of the game (if not all) in North America can be killed with a .308 Win. With that, bullet placement, range, and recoil sensitivity needs to be addressed as you select your caliber. The Natives up here in Alaska, hunt all kinds of animals with .30-40 Krags, .30-30's, .303's, etc. If you hit your chosen game properly (with any of the calibers you're considering), they'll fall over and not live long enough to warn their friends or family that you're looking for them.
